You can paint the block with normal duco/300 paint.

It sticks better than the head resistant paint.

I finally managed to make a little progress, I installed the timing gears on the crank along with the small main bearing and oil thrower.Gears just slid on the crank after heating them with a few minutes with my electric heat gun.
Hopefully I can assemble the short block this weekend

Some good progress was made today the casing is assembled still have to fit the conrods on the crank, I like fitting them afterwards.

Managed to fit the conrods last weekend would have liked to do more but my 2 month old little one doesn't allow me to do much.
Gonna try and set the crank endplay,fit flywheel and fit the oil pump this weekend

Well the engines apart now theres a problem with the cam gear backlash its too much even dragged the short block to Dave R for his opinion and he told me to try and get a plus sized cam gear at the moment I have a -1 cam gear gonna try and hunt down a +1 cam gear if anyone has a 3 bolt +1 cam gear let me know pls

why dont you find an old stock cam and use that gear, then also replace the gear on the crank?

Or just go to shelleys, I am sure they will have what you are looking for

Yes Tony Z im gonna have to get another used cam just to get the gear thats what I done to get the gear I am currentely using just though someone might have a cam laying around.
Guess its off to Volksie World this coming weekend to sift through all the used cams again

Went to Volksie World today and scratched through the stash of camshafts they had, managed to find a camshaft with a nice 0 size gear on and it was already modified for bolts instead of the usual rivets so that was really a good find so engine is back on track

The 0 size cam gear still had too much backlash so I got another cam with a +2 gear today now the cam gear backlash is perfect I can just detect the slightest of play between the gears, just got to modify the gear for bolts.I also picked up a tube of MoS2 Moly assembly lube from Dave Rowley today apparentely its quite hard to get and its the good stuff from the USA.
Hopefully I can assemble this engine for good soon

Use it on your cam too instead of that red cam lube

I know thats when I saw it there I just had to buy it, Dave said he had 10 tubes in stock and that it was difficult to airfreight it in but he got it in somehow and at R110 for a 2oz tube it was worth every cent

Got the cam gear back from Dave R today after he counterbored it for the cam bolts.
Assembled the casing this afternoon, everything went together fine and more importantly the cam gear backlash problem is a thing of the past I can just detect the tiniest amount of play between the cam gears.
Next is to set the endplay and torque up the flywheel then I can start building it up to a long block

A possible alternative:
Loctite 8012 (Moly Paste Anti-Seize)

MoS2 assembly paste ensures maximum lubricity, gives good resistance to extremely high loads and is ideal for protection of parts during running in or cold start. Used to eliminate friction seizure during assembly (high % MoS2)
