Re: My Type 1 turbo circuit racer (update pg43)
That was on Saturday.
Qualifying was a nightmare. Went out, did three laps and then got T-boned properly on the driver side on the exit of turn 5. Other car burst a brake hose and used my door to stop his car. Rear fender, 1/4 panel and front door is stuffed. The impact was enough to bend the roll cage sissy bar right up against the seat. Roll cage and neck brace did their job, I only got a couple of bruises on my knee.
Got back into the pits, bent the door back so it actually closes... check hubs and wheel alignment. Car is still straight wheelbase wise, but plenty cosmetic damage
Race 1. Started in 21st place overall but did not really make up a lot of places. The beetle is seriously underpowered against the big guys, but still had a good race. Finished 16th overall. On the first lap going into turn 4 everything got a little tight and I touched the black Datsun with the LF fender... no more headlight and some fiberglass damage to the beetle. I have not had any body damage on the car in about 5 years... so it seems like I do it properly when I do.
. Going up to turn 5 I almost got taken out again by the Escort as he came flying past the inside and then ran wide. Around lap 8 I had a huge moment on the turn 6 exit, full lock countersteer as the arse came out. Managed to catch it at least.
Racing against the red 351ci v8 capri was frustrating... I pass him under braking and into the corner just for him to come flying past down the straight again.

Race 2. Saw a couple of good dices again and I probably passed infamous the red Capri 8 times going into rurn 5. I'm sure he is pissed at me for not letting him go.
. Never give up!!! He might have 300hp more than me, but handling means a lot too
. I must say that the guy in the capri sure does trust the beetle's brakes... he would come past and then slam onto the brakes right in front of me.

Re: My Type 1 turbo circuit racer (update pg43)
Hi Louis, just watched all your YouTube video clips of presumably your Dad doing oval track racing in 90 - 95, damn that car was fast! Now I'm sitting here with adrenalin pumping wanting to take the Beetle for a spin but the cops are all out in my area tonite so I'm stuck behind the computer watching racing clips.
I have a spare Beetle and excellent engine block I got from Calooker, starting to think about oval track just because it looks exiting and cheaper ( u know me cheap and broke as shyte but always trying
) than Historic + I don't want to use my current 1.9 Turbo car, that must stay a street sleeper (Spent too much on it ). What do you think of a Beetle oval tracker nowadays, all the racers keep telling don't bother with a beetle on oval track but I've seen beetles on the track including the Mild to Wild midget those days which they could never catch and always lapped other cars, so I'm sorta thinking they don't want Beetles on oval cause of something?
What's your take on this, excuse the questions but it's all your fault
, just joking,
Cheer's, Juan

#170 all fixed and painted. Looks almost as good as before.
Took her out for a drive on Sunday to the vwclub skidpan day. Was fun just cruising to the track... makes you enjoy the car again... I was in my happy place

Re: My Type 1 turbo circuit racer (update pg43)
I managed to spend some time on the #71 beetle this weekend. We made up a water bottle with pressure cap to hold the water for the turbo water cooling. The electric water pump in installed just below the bottle and feeds to the front of the car where we used two type 4 oil coolers for the water cooling. If one cooler can keep a type 4 engine cold, then two should keep the water system cold enough. From the coolers the water is fed to the turbo and then back to the bottle.
From what I understood, ball bearing turbos rely on the water cooling for bearing life... thus the water cooling that we added. I'm sure it will help for oil temperatures as well.

Front and rear wheel alignment done and the car is squared up. The biggest job left is to wire the car and engine ecu's.

Re: My Type 1 turbo circuit racer (update pg43)
Wheel alignment on the front and back done. Stringed the car up and it's all square. Biggest job left is to wire the car and the ecu's.
The wiring is getting pretty complex with all the electronic devices etc that need to be fitted...
On the ecu's:
Outputs
4x Injectors on map sensor tuning
4x injectors on tps tuning
Coil pack on map sensor tuning
Intercooler fan
Intercooler water spray
Oil cooler water spray
Fuel pump
Turbo water pump
Boost control solenoid
Inputs
36 -1 crank pickup
Cylinder head temperature
Boost air temperature
MAP sensor
TPS
Lambda
Then on the data logging and digital dash:
Oil temperature
Oil pressure
Fuel pressure
MAP
Air temperature boost
Air temperature ambient
Lambda
EGT
Turbo water temperature
Steering angle
TPS
GPS
So much for weight saving with all these wires that need to go in...

Re: My Type 1 turbo circuit racer (update pg43)
Started wiring up the ecu's last night... what a tedious process. Everything is crimped, soldered and double shrinked. All 8 injectors and ignition coil wired.
No insulation tape on any of my wiring... that is why heatshrink exists. :fear:
Injector pin crimped
Put a dab of solder

Plug into connector with boot and mark with sticker

2x Bottom and 2x Top injectors

Ignition coil

That's the proper way to do wiring. I see you're using the blue silicone hose with cable-ties. I use it is well and always have problems with jubilee clamps damaging them. I suppose because of their softness they shouldn't need more than cable-ties as long as you keep temperature away from them.

I am not 100% happy with the vacuum pipes... might change them to festo fittings.
