Still immobile today, I made good use of the day off, and started with the installation of the 914 rev counter in the dash. These pics are a bit graphic, but there is no other way to do it since I am not prepared to buy a 115mm hole saw that I will only use once

(Not even Volkspares use a hole saw for the buggies they build for customers.)
Masking tape was put on the dash, the rev counter was measured, and a perfect circle the size of the rev counter was drawn (by compass, not by hand!

) on the masking tape. I then drilled small holes on the inside of the circle, all around
The small pieces of fibreglass inbetween the holes were then cut away, leaving a gaping hole in the dash with rather rugged edges
I then cleaned the rugged edges with the Dremel, till the surface was smooth (and the circle true) again. The gauge is a perfect fit!

Thanks, Blitz. I was a bit worried when I had the rev counter refurbished, when the guys at the VDO shop said it would be blown if you use it with a normal contact breaker point distributor, instead of electronic ignition. I only recently realised that 914's orginally came from the factory with points in their dizzies, so it won't be a problem! This was also confirmed on TheSamba after a question I posted.

Speedo & fuel gauges are in - still have to fit the oil press and batt charge lights, as well as headlight and hazard switches. The tach has the blue high beam and indicator lights already inside. Does anyone know if there are aftermarket pilot lights available on the market with 'OIL' and 'BATT' signs on? I had used LED's in HW1, but they are not very visible in bright daylight so I don't think I'll fit it again.

Slowly but surely things are starting to get together, and this afternoon I got the roll cage and 'dry-fitted' it with the bonnet and headlights on HW2. (The holes for the headlights were already drilled the weekend.)
So, does this start looking like a buggy or WHAT??
Unfortunately it started raining again and I had to quickly move it back into the garage before I could take more pics..
The roll cage is not finished yet, and the slightest moist on it will cause immediate surface rust.
There are a few things I am not happy with at the moment - the front bumper is too low, the rear is too high, and the exact height for the front suspension is not set yet. The dual-stage master cylinder had the resevoir bottle straight on, but it needs to be located remotely, like that of a Beetle. Nonetheless, the guys at Volkspares have done an excellent job in moulding the shell, and the roll cage - everything fits perfectly!
I am really getting excited now - but in reality there is still a helluva lot of work to do, and many hours to be put into it. No use getting
haastig now..
I had a few doubts on the colour at first, but it is really growing on me
Had an MRI scan done on the knee this morning, will probably get the results tomorrow. Knee is feeling a lot better, still confident an op will not be neccessary. Driving not that difficult - only the traffic jams with all the clutch-in, clutch-out is a bit painful.
