Re: My Type 1 turbo circuit racer (update pg43)
Now that all the shops have opened after December break progress can continue.
I received the air filter and exhaust wrap this weekend. The filter is freekin huge!!!
Just a couple of small items left on the boost pipes, then the engine can come out again.
Next step from there is to trial fit the wide fenders and bumper

Re: My Type 1 turbo circuit racer (update pg43)
Question... Why do your boost pipes go into the side of the "filter" housings and not the top pointing straight down? I would think (which could be the problem) that the air would flow better if directed from above? Or is it just a space thing?

Re: My Type 1 turbo circuit racer (update pg43)
It's mainly for space and there is ram tubes in the air boxes that will smooth out the airflow

Re: My Type 1 turbo circuit racer (update pg43)
That's some awesome machine-work and engineering going on there mate, I'll bet it's going to fly when finished.
Is this going to be raced in a local series, or in some contributing series to a Nats series? It would be cool to follow the cars progress on TV if there's every any coverage.
Awesome work.
All the best
Regards
Alan

Re: My Type 1 turbo circuit racer (update pg43)
Most probably we will occasionally race the car in Silvercup and BMW clubday. It all depends on the lap times the car is capable off.
In silvercup we will run in class A due to the turbo setup which means that the car must be able to run at least 1:12's to be competitive.

Re: My Type 1 turbo circuit racer (update pg43)
Exhaust header has been cleaned and painted, next step it to wrap them to keep the engine bay temps down. Got some thermotec 2" black wrap for that already. The turbo exhaust housing still needs a blanket as well. Need money captain
The front bumper is getting there slowly... a lot of trimming still to be done.
I'm still unsure of what to do with the running boards... maybe go a similar route as the guys from J-sport in japan The new front suspension is also coming on slowly, the old one was a cut/weld job. The new one now has adjusters so we can lower the ride height as need be and maybe try tension the spring plates to make it harder.

Re: My Type 1 turbo circuit racer (update pg43)
The rear fenders came from VS, the front ones I think came from Gordon in PTA. They are widened about 2" on the front and the back.
The whole track will will be widened as well, so the wheels will fill the fenders nicely when done.

Re: My Type 1 turbo circuit racer (update pg43)
Continued some work on the front suspension... adjusters welded in and suspension in place. The shock towers have been extended to connect onto the roll cage. We still need to brace them properly.
A new addition is the links on the bottom trailing arms to try eliminate the suspension flex, I got that idea from Greg Mackie in AUS who ran a similar setup on his beetle years ago.
We have also decided to go back to the steering box as the rack setup we had in was too slow and the rod angles was incorrect thus having more bump steer than the stock setup.
Next step is to finish the suspension bracing and then make a fuel surge tank. We also still need to find a spot for the water radiator that will cool the turbo bearing housing. Maybe above the oil cooler will work
The weight is piling up quickly.... I think we need to Swiss cheese some stuff to get the weight down again

Re: My Type 1 turbo circuit racer (update pg43)
Finished the fuel surge tank last night. It holds about 2 liters. The idea is that the original beetle tank will feed into the surge tank, the surge tank feeds the pump and the return line from the injectors comes back into the surge tank with a breather to the main tank again.
The fuel pump location is still a little problem... maybe inside the passenger foot well.
