1 i dont think that steering wheels diameter is much smaller than 17inch.
2 the splines on the steering wheel doesnt match the splines on a beetle column.

Thanks for the offer, Blitz, but that wheel is destined for your Fastback. Still haven't figured out exactly how to do the steering shaft setup, but anything can be done. I had the shaft of my 412 modified to Golf splines by an engineering shop to fit the GTi steering wheel I had in the past on it - no problem.

When you visit me again will show you how I used the bug and Polo ignition stalks and plastic covers on my bug

Thanks Bugger I might stick to the steering wheel I got at Ferdie's earlier this year, just recover it and find a nice centre button

After speaking to a few guys on this forum, the easiest solution is to find a steering shaft from an SP Beetle with the 3 spoke sports steering wheel. On that SP wheel, the splines are exactly the same as that one from a GTI

So if anyone has just the steering shaft from an SP, I would like to buy it

Buggyfan, I've just bought another one of those steering wheels from chris. With the centre horn piece will be hiding this that i got for a future project. I love these steering wheels! Regardless of size.

Thanks for the kind offer, Buggyfan - but the GTi steering wheel is not exactly what I had in mind, although it would look great on a German looker!

UPDATE SAT 04/10/08:

As said before, I first have to sort out my working environment before carrying on with the buggy, and as such I spent the past two days (leave yesterday) doing just that. Not finished yet, but getting there. A lot of stuff is organised better now, and I have a better idea now of what I have and what I need.

I have, however, done a few things to the buggy, or well at least some components of it -

Electronic ignition



Got another electronic wasserboxer dizzy in the week, and was curious if it worked. So I set up all the wiring on the bench (coil, harness, TCI, dizzy, plug etc.) - and it WORKED! A healthy spark jumped between the electrodes of the plug, but I also got quite a shock earthing myself by touching my elbows to the (metal) surface of the work bench whilst turning the dizzy shaft and concentrating on the plug... Well, at least I know it works now Believe me there is A REASON why many modern cars have this sticker in their engine bays - no $h!t, Sherlock!!



The main reason for going to electronic ignition is because of advice of a VDO specialist: The Porsche rev counter I have 'doesn't like' the 'rough' signal as received from contact breaker points, and might not last.. enough said, I ain't gonna take any chances!

IRS?



I bought this rear IRS clip pictured below a while ago with the intention of using it to convert the SP2 to IRS. But the 1302 has crossed my paths since then, and most of its rear suspension parts and gearbox will be used for the SP2, which by the way has came almost to a standstill - for the time being, at least

Anyway, I have tried in vain to sell (almost GIVE AWAY) the clip to date, but with no success, so I'm stuck with it - I can just as well use it. I am playing with the idea to have the IRS rear suspension installed in the buggy anyway - in spite of the fact that I do not have the IRS gearbox, CV's, side shafts, and only one swingarm. The idea is to modify the buggy to accommodate IRS, yet use a normal swingarm suspension till I have sourced the remaining IRS parts. So with the rear suspension clip installed, I will fit a normal swing arm gearbox for now, and once an IRS gearbox become available, it should be a relative quick and painless conversion (or so I hope! ). The only difference for the time being will be the IRS pivot boxes (those small squares in the corners of the chassis fork).

Still not sure if it will work, but stand by for more info -

In a nutshell, what I actually meant with the post above is 'Yes, it would be nice to have IRS on the buggy some day, but I'm not gonna let the project come to a halt just because IRS parts are not available at the moment, I'm just keeping my options open!'

I'm sure with enough patience (and $$$) anything is possible, but I would suggest fitting the rear suspension from a Bay to convert your splitty to IRS - it should be easier to source?
