I have a new respect for the art of contortion
The carbs are in tight and all plumbing sorted..
Just need to modify a slightly long acc cable then change oil fit new billet sump cover...
Sat we start her and balance carbs ... Sun show her at cars in park..

Today had a spare moment so I decided to make a pair of velocity stacks as I can't find any for the Baby Webers anywhere,
These will be used for show days ....

looks good.
Use the stacks for show days... I wouldnt.
People do all sorts of nasty things and it wouldnt be unheard of someone dropping some sand or a 5c coin in there just for laughs.

Will remember the nasty damage people could do
I made a video of her running but it's too large to upload onto the thread...
We need to sort the left bank carb the carb seems to be flooding , float issue ..
but at least now we have her running ... The carb will be sorted then we fine tune her ..

Today after 5 months I eventually got to drive the Jade Bug....
I had forgotten how " real and hard" a Beetle drives .. I'm spoilt by my e class ...
I took a drive to fuel up as i need to take her to my Father's tomorrow so we can dial in the carbs and sort the left carb as it floods intermittently
I also have to redo the brakes and today's 5 Odd km made me realise .. I need to do a front disc conversion at the very least..
The car pulls well and motor is more than willing .. since it was my first drive (could not drive her when I bought her as I was still unable to bend due to shattered hip, and hip replacement) .
I enjoyed the back to real driving and the looks at the queue at the petrol station ... The GT exhaust and twin carbs sound great
Even idling for 15 min at the garage didn't bother her ( I forgot about fuel prices going up and the garages all had 6 deep queues )
And when I got home the temp in the engine bay was not as high as before I did the engine..

Did a 20km ride to take the Bug to my old man's
This was an experience ... limited brakes , wrongly set up clutch and irratic idle, with no speedo
Horrendous bouncing of the rear especially when turning
This being my first real ride.. I now have further items to redo on the poor JADE
New shocks in back
new brake shoes in back and upgrade to discs up front
new ( used ) Speedo.....
Met eis but it is all in the Fun....
I did do all these on my Rat anyway...so the Jade deserves the same respect...
Anyone got a decent working Speedo to sell?
Keep it real, keep it aircooled....

That is why I love driving these old timers. It sure as hell is a lot of fun. You as the driver still have to have the skill of driving as there are no driver aids. Remember the first time I got behind the Hippie's wheel. It was a total culture shock for me as my former mini had completely different driving characteristics to the bug. Front engine, front drive, hard as rock suspension with a VERY low centre of
gravity compared to the bugs set up. But you do the driving and not the electronics
The Bug has bitten. I'm doomed for ever

Have new rear shocks will instal sometime this week

My Dad and I Spent too many hours dismantling both carbs .. cleaning checking all the jets and idle jet etc..
refitted, and still irratic idle refitted Scat linkage still irratic but now RH... carb is the b..t..ch.
Will try with tighter fitting balance tube on Wed or I'm going back to stock single carb..
we have them balanced then suddenly it's irratic when idling after a minute or so...
we tried with balance tube connected .. With it clamped off .. no balance tube and blocked off tubes... no difference ...

These Brazilian (DFV 228 ) Webers just don't like the Jade Bug. .
I will sell them with manifolds and Scat linkage (new)
To someone with more patience or swop them out for a nice progresive single carb with manifold..
I don't have patience for the hassle ... All the previous builds were single carbs and ran like purring cats within minutes..
not this puppy...

Collecting a second hand working Speedo tomorrow. .. will instal it when I do shocks
OH I decided against deck lid stand offs ... looks too "tappet" IMHO..on this bug...so took the aluminium deck lid stand offs off ... might sell these

Fitted new rear shocks , adjusted clutch... but I think the Bowden tube needs a bigger bend.. as I get bunny hops on some up hill pull aways..
I will be going single carb .. doing these dual 34 itc webers .. is over my patience level... idling settings etc.....

Drove a short while and the shocks and adjusted brakes make a great difference in corners .. The old rear shocks were siezed up...
when they were out .. they were empty and could not move ...
I could not believe the previous owner could drive the poor bug like that

Do you have the setting sheet for these carb's....???

If not, I can post one for you, its very easy to set these carb's, have them on all my Aircooled 's

They must be set in a set order, or you will be setting for weeks on end.

If you set all the links, and use a hosepipe, the jobs done.

Here you go....

Have also placed it under "Advice" for others to find, maybe the green mods can make it a sticky.
