Agree with Dsan. Original 1940's to early 50's beetle did not have chrome trimmings.
In fact the basic version of later beetles in europe came without them.

Chrome-trimmings are non-functional, (at the wrong height to protect the bodywork against opening car-doors),

With a disadvantage-

Water can enter through that holes in the bodywork, causing rust...
For a daily driver for practical reasons i see no need to have them.
A show-car in a museum is a different story.
But this is just my humble opinion.

Yah the rust factor also had dictated various designs being made on this car, especially since it will spend most of its time in Durban.

It's not a show car, but more of a daily runner using something that's half a century old.

I've been thinking about the retards that live on SA's roads and whilst not want to distract from the clean look I'm going for, I also want to ensure the f**** can see me when I press the brake pedal, so with that in mind, I've just ordered this:

nice and discreet and hopefully does the job. How have others gotten around this issue?

After 3 weeks away, he's been busy sorting out the body work and so far I'm impressed.

All bits have been welded up that needed welding, all rust has been cut out and every dent/bump/scratch been sorted to. They were in the process of giving it the final wet sand before paint today, so fingers crossed it should be looking good by friday.

Still to do:

1: Roof lining (black)
2: Carpets (black)

2nd coat was applied today, it's being wet sanded as we speak.

As usual, some bits were missed so the rear bumpers have to be sorted again and a small area resprayed, as i wasn't happy with the finish. Before they could remove the wiring loom, one of the lads took it on his own to snip all the wires and remove it. The cock, so that will have to be sorted.

nothing ever goes to plan

Progress is lovely!

Dash area has been sorted, some minor changes needed after the 1st attempt didn't meet my anally retentive eye. Finally that awful hole left by the previous owner has been removed and a cleaner look restored to the car. No radio will ever be installed there, if I ever did go down the route, it would be tastefully installed and hidden somewhere, leaving a minimal look on the dash.

Car is in final polish today and will be having the hood lining and interior done and sent to my flat by 5pm.

The moment (part 1)

Now waiting on parts. The bits I needed from Calooker are on the way, the interior is ready tomorrow, so this weekend will consist of me doing as much as I can. Utterly blown away with the work so far, the colour is off the scale (in my mind, your mind might think otherwise).

Tell me about it, I'm already paranoid about scratching any of the body, although he has offered a full touch up service once it's all complete, which is pretty cool.

Now, if only I can work out how the hell to put all the window trim back together....
