Question about engine tinware

Post by Barry »

So on the subject of cooling again - some help/advice please.

This is what the engine bay looks like:
engine bay.JPG
I plan on making up the tinware to seperate top & bottom in the area outlined in blue. What has to happen in the area outlined in red (if anything)? As well as the holes marked with crosses.

Is there tinware missing in this area? The rubber skirt would seem to indicate that there should be there, but besides some manifold heat, I would imagine most of the fresh air would be entering here - if anything I would like to increase this, with some positive force feeding by means of scoops under the car.

Also, anything missing from the underside? - looks like there may be sonmething that should attach to the blue plate?

Anyway, not too much else to show. Bootlid is nearly done, and I've been fixing my screw ups on the sides - symmetry was a little off. Hopefully I'll have pics soon.

Thanks for looking

What about a scoop, like you said, under the car that feeds cool air rirect to the fan.

Those holes can be blanked off, because that is where the pipes that came from the fan shroud went through.

I Also wondered about the scoup idea but canned it after checking how the air actually flows when cooling a beetle engine.

Air is forced from the fan housing through the sleeves and the oil cooler out the bottom of the engine. The air is therefore hot when it omes out.

Air flowing at the bottom of the engine ensures that this air is dispersed away from the engine. It also flows over the bottom half of the engine (that is ribbed) and cools down the block and sump.

I figure that putting a scoup would remove this airflow and could be counter productive to cooling.

I think It would be better if you make vents on the hatch allowing air into the engine compartment.

Thanks Eben - that's useful.
I think I'll need to check out standard set up - don't know about the "forget me nots"

Did you get all the answers? Like at the back of the engine, there's more Beetle tinware missing which if you install it will make the job of fabricating seperation plates at the rear easier...

Harry - barely going at all since I got back to work......

Ron - thanks, I have the plates you mention and will have to see whether it is easier to add sections on to close the gaps, or make all new.

Tony Z gave me a few pointers on Friday night, so I will try out his suggestions and see how I get on.
