Went and bought a "sausage" of Sikaflex from Glassfit, and a good chat with the owner.. Had to go buy a Silicone gun etc, and a lot of thinners.. This stuff is DISGUSTINGLY dirty, like Black Silicone x 10.. I don't know if I'm supposed to feel so paranoid working with the windscreen, I mean, the original cracked with VERY little anything.. I am hoping it was old, and already had a small crack I just didn't see, but because of that, and the fact they cost 2 Grand a pop, I'm OVERLY :bn: scared handling this screen and the frame.. Half filled the channel with Sikaflex, then pressing in the Windscreen, now edged all the way round with Foam weather sealer. And this oozed out a bit of Sikaflex which took an entire roll of toilet paper to clean properly.. It's the worst stuff out there. Anyway, it's now drying. in a few days, I'm going to get normal Silicone and fill the remaining cavity and smooth off to create a nice, clean, smooth presented finish of black rubber\Silicone.. The next BIG stress session will be re-mounting the window on the car, as I have to drill new holes in the Body, then alight the window with the body rubber correctly, and tighten it down.. I so hope there's enough window INSIDE the frame that it doesn't press against the frame when I tighten it all up. Dammit, this is a VERY delicate component to these cars, and god forbid any of you have to do this, it's not a nice job..

Bought a cleaned up no vent holes Shroud for the motor and a classic pair of inside door handles, and am getting some additional new door panels with some stitching done. Have already cut and made up new door panels, this time with no speakers etc, and am going to mount as per original look, with screws and screw cups to give it a traditional look and finish.

A few days to go, and the car's home.. Then we start.. Dynamat, Dash, wiring, gauges, carpeting, door panels, exterior, and eventually, new Roof and Tonneau "boot" cover.

The original didn't. It was sitting in a very worn out piece of "something".. Like the old, hairy kind of sponge foam.. There wasn't any real support at all.. I then bought the correct thickness rubber which fits in the channel, but then as I tried pressing in the windscreen, it just cracked.. I really didn't do much, but it obviously wasn't happy.. So have had to do it this way.. It does look a lot stronger and all seems ok.. So it's curing now for a few days.

Pics....

The Shroud, a 36HP Doghouse version, as I don't intend relocating my oil cooler, and the windscreen. Can't really see the job, but it's all done. After thinking how to do it cleaner on the other side after the messy job yesterday, I came up with a good solution. I used thin Pin striping and taped the screen as close to the frame as possible, and then covered the frame in tape, so when I then squeezed silicone and flattened in the recess, all excess was on the tape. Once done, I peeled up the tape, and the screen and frame were spotless, with Silicone IN the cavity, and not around it.. Windscreen now done. I will make new Rubber "feet" for the side posts out of rubber when I get the car back and am about to mount the screen.

Popped in at the Bodyshop to check progress. My eyebrow's got bolts glassed in, ready to be covered. Body is looking stunningly good, but floorboards are buggered, so they're replacing two rear floorboards due to rust.. Hope to collect this weekend..

Whoop whoop..

It's always a good thing to meet someone who can provide awesome Service, and is friendly, communicative, keeps you updated, what bliss...
Marshal is my upholsterer, he does an AWESOME job for little money, but he does a GENUINE job, makes the effort, sms's me when the jobs done, tells when he's open or closed, gives me his new address when he moved premises recently.. So I showed him a Pic of what the door panels must look like. He had to sew a "pocket" and paneling along the bottom strip, thats all.. I had made new door cards, and covered them again myself..
This is what I showed him I want..

Looks great Alan. Why did he not the divider in the middle of the pocket as in your sample pic?

Will help keep the pocket from sagging over time.

Your ride is gonna look killer. Also like the koir mats in the pic.

Hey Muds,
thanks man.. There's actually a screw through the middle of the pocket into the door panel\body. I tried to hid the screws initially with tan cups as used on the cupboards, but most of the Pics I see they use nice stainless star screws and cups, and many of them, as you can see in the sample pic.. So I'm putting these on the car with nice stainless phillips screws.

The Carpeting isn't my choice.. I'm going to get as close as possible to an "Oatmeal" sandy mix carpet through the guys that Roscoe knows with the Karmann Ghia, but I'll have nice black rubber mats in the carpets in each floorwell. Practical, easy to clean, and looks much better than these.

Yep, I'm trying more than I thought I would.. ;-)

Interesting thing. In my boredom waiting to get the car, and preparing everything else, I opened up the new Teardrop Lights I bought, and weirdly, they have the Tail light and brake Bulb mounted behind the Indicator Lense, and the single "indicator" bulb, behind the smaller brake lense!! And I can see how easy it is to then melt these lenses, because by attempting to fit standard dual element bulbs in the smaller brake lnese compartment, the bulb is so big it sits up against the inner part of the lense!! Daft bloody design.
So I'm going to look for the smaller Bulb with dual elements. If that comes up negative, I'm going to consider fitting another small Bulb holder in that space. LED's have also crossed my mind, but I don't think you can "hide" LED's behind a lense. I don't want new tech tho, so need to find a clean solution for this problem.

I also have the last gauge decals finally on their way from my printing mate in the UK.. This is the Combo Gauge, which I'll be rotating to lie horizontally in the car, as opposed to Vertically how it sat in the 912. Seriously hoping they all work, otherwise more kark and cash to get them to work.

quick update. Received my Roof and new up-facing numberplate Light from Manny, thanks buddy, it's awesome..
also got off the phone with the Bodyshop. They're finishing Oxidizing the top and bottom of the chassis, and then stonechip going on for added protection, then I can collect it. It's looking wicked good. I've got all new replacement door, boot, bonnet rubber, as well as new Engine Bay covering, which will also help soundproof, and finish off the engine bay cleanly. I'm doing a basic Engine Cosmetic upgrade as well, and later on, some head-work with my friend Tony.
The last Decals for the Combo gauge are int he post, I should get them this week.. Then the gauges will have all be refurbished and looking the part. Then we start rebuilding.. Will be posting a pile of pics during the progress build.

cheers

Alan
