Tony Z wrote:So far the car has been doing fairly well but popping and staling at 4000rpm. So I decided to pull the carbs and fan housing.

I changed the manifolds for the big ones, cut the fan shroud a little to make it fit better and installed new spark plugs and leads.

Today I hit the 500km mark. With the new bits, she revs easily up to 5500. This without pushing her too hard. The carbs are so loud that they set off car alarms when I open up the throttle. My ears are ringing. 150km/h without blinking. I accidentaly did a 20m wheel spin cutting in front of some moving traffic, in second gear - OK was turning a corners, so one tyre came loose, but its still a novelty.

I cant wait to do another 500km and then get it onto the dyno for a power run.

Sounds Awesome...!!

Tony just a few qeustions that i think you might be able to answer for me...

On a mild 1600 would it be better to run straight cut gears or the original style slanted gears?
Then...Can you keep the orginal oil cooler that sits in the doghouse and then still be able to attach a filter and cooler, sort of on one line?
Like this...
Image

Would i need a bigger oil pump for the above?

Thanks

the pic you posted is OK for an external oil cooler, but you would be better off adding in a thermostat. IMO on a mild 1600 there is no need for an external cooler if your cooling tin is all in place - I never needed one before.
You can use a stock oil pump, but a few small mods to it to make it flow better wouldnt hurt, but also not really needed.
What exactly are you trying to do to the 1600? I can answer better when I know more.

Stock cam gear is ok. Straight gears are noisy and annoying, which is why I dont use them on my 2332. wont hurt to use them, but not needed. Run a double thrust cam bearing (cheaper to buy 2 sets of stock bearings and use both the thrust bearings and throw the extras away than to buy a double thrust kit) - the straight cut gears are only really needed when you run super high spring pressures which wont be needed on a mild 1600.

Tony love the car,can only imagine that motor in a buggy...should be insane...shane start a thread, than we can all have nice debate over what to do and what not to do...dont wanna jack tony's thread...but ive got a similar motor, and believe me it runs well without that fancy stuff...

Dude, dont skimp here. Its not expensive, get new valves. If one exh valve is tired, it will break and kill the whole engine.

If you are keeping the stock pushrods, keep stock springs. HD springs need HD pushrods.
I would also get the crank counterweighted.

And yes, as dubster says... start a new thread.

No Pine.... as in the engine is running and not much left to do to it (until I go turbo).

BTW, a name change is also on the cards, as Suicyde has been the name since day 1. The car has taken on a completely new character and is now just angry....

How 'bout ZORNIG, then - it is German for ANGRY?

(but it also means angry; mad; wrathful; irate & furious)

and today while doing 140 on the highway.... oil pressure light comes on.
No leaks, oil sump full.... pump not pumping. Lets hold thumbs that nothing is broken.... and to top it off, my other car is getting a new clutch today, so I have no transport.

Big thanks to Thumper for fetching me and towing the car to his work... more info to follow once I get my car back and can see whats wrong with the beetle.
