All the rain in jhb over the last month has not created a condusive atmosphere for painting
Will the car be painted outside?

Doubt it, but you dont spray in High humidity like this. You get water drops coming through the gun and ruining the spray job. and the paint does flash off as quickly and is more prone to sagging if you go a bit too thick. So unless you have a good spray booth with decent water traps and a dryer on the compressed air line, its not advisable to spray till its dry and sunny.

Also its not good to spray outside, the sun has adverse effects on the paint sometimes and can cause it to bubble or lift later on. besides the fact that the dirt and dust kicked up from the floor by the spray guns overspray can ruin your spray job as well.

James correct, but so many here seem to favor this approach, even companies!

so Karma, when are you expecting this to be on the road?

Dsan, my best guess would be that soon as we can spray, it will be at least another two months before she is ready for roadworthy (assembly, road testing, fixing little snags, one or two parts I still have to get) so if the rain stops soon, maybe middle april ?? Wish us luck!

Collected a engine cover from bugger last week, all the way from Cape Town - Thank you RON!

Good to meet you Bugger, and see what you are up to.

Some nice cars standing around including a sweet semi-complete squary :hangloose:, and of course, enough gearboxes stashed to build everyone on the forum a new one.

While I was there, two friendly neighbours popped in to ask bugger for a "quick" hand. Skymac did his best to impale himself with bits of flying metal :twisted: , but the job was done an hour or so later without any injuries. At least it gave Pine and myself some time to talk ACVW, while keeping a safe distance :twisted: Fig, bring your axle with that stubborn drum, I am sure it can be removed :-)

And then, to top it all off, Bugger gave me another engine cover from a parts squary he has standing around!! What a score!
Nice meeting/seeing you all. If we stayed a little longer I am sure it would have turned into an impromptu social evening. :D

That should be all the metal bits for the notch now sorted. Lets hope we can start spraying soon.....

I only update when there is something worth mentioning. My depression as to the parts we still need has temporarily put a damper on things. Bootlid is really VROT, hence my request for a new one, more rust on the A pillar's, rust on the left rear c pillar.
Ok, we should not REALLY be surprised, just when you think we are almost there.....

I hear you ask, what was wrong with his repair of the bootlid, absolutely nothing actually. The trim inside the bootlid, which rests on the body when closed,and holds the locking mechanism, is so thin and rusted away, there is nothing to weld to. Can anyone say rice paper ? This is a pressed part, and very tricky to fabricate...

So, someone please help with a bootlid! Then we can - dare I say it - finally get to a state of spray readiness...

On the positive side, wings are ready to go, beam is back in, red engine tin looks as good in real life as in the pics.
I dropped off the rosty's few weekends ago so Bugoff can start on these so long, so there is hope!

Have you checked VDB's yard for a bootlid? This Notch can like to be rocking when it's done! :hangloose:

Just before you lot start thinking we abandoned ship, a quick update. No comments about missed deadlines and lack of updates please. :mrgreen: Best laid plans and all that jazz...

Still looking for a BOOTLID. Went to Van Den Brink's this morning, no one home. Will have to try again in the week. Hooted,phoned, nada. So the search is still on. Please, someone, help us find a bootlid.

Meanwhile back at Ferdi's Funky Volkswagen Ranch, the notch went under the knife once more.

The rust mentioned on the left rear c-pillar, was, at it turns out, not just a small spot. No Sir, when a Type 3 rusts, it rusts PROPERLY.
