You could have two options? Useing a bug as donner car.. Electric motors direct drive to the wheels or EM on the gearbox?

If you fit onto the gearbox, you will reduce the electrical controller cost, and have a full range of speeds, and reverse.
I have spoken to Zest Electrical on this subject, as they have the motor, controller and they can include regenerative breaking into the controller.
Still waiting for them to confirm sponsoring me with the equipment in exchange for advertising.
Want to mod my 1959 beetle to this concept.

What size motor do they have and what would the ruff project cost?
How much work would it take to convert and what internal combustion motor would you mate to it?
Tell me more about the energy recovery system?
I suppose you can use solar pannels to power things like radio, windscreen wipers ( dont know about that what with it raining and all) all the internal electrical extras...
So you need the petrol & electric motors, adaption plate/clutch assembly, Controller(tell me more about this) what else?

Well, let me tell you how I have planed my build.

Remove the VW motor, and make an coupler from the electric motor via the clutch and fly wheel to the spigot shaft.
Reason for flywheel, is to make the regenerative braking more effective.
Fit cover platform over electric motor and mount small motor/generator unit onto it.
Why reinvent the wheel, (or in this case, the generator).
Cut out the sunroof, and fit solar panels
So that it is flush with roof, and not stick out.
Fit the AC inverter control unit into the back with the genny system.
This inverter will have regenerative braking, via the electric motor when you take your foot of the gas pedal.
The power will come from normal car battery's, as they are faster to charge, and can be charged by the solar panel as well.
The Genny unit will charge as needed, and be on auto start, when the battery gets to a set level.
Rest of the car will stay as is, and with very little effort, be changed back when you want.

Well thats my idea, and I am sticking to it.....

What size electric motor would you use?
So the regenerative power comes from the flywheel and not the wheels. The inertia of the flywheel is whats used to generate the power?

Update time!!

So plans for George are coming on nicely! Been busy doing a whole lot of f@kall all over the car and the progress is impressive! A lot of hours was spent on the interior and the f@kall really jumps out at you! Changed the colour from white to a dusty brown with streaks of white showing through. Kinda like a rain effect! Turned the steering wheel and oh my f@k the front wheels turned! Hard work is paying off. Just a few more hard hours of f@kall and ill be back on track with my project time line of finishing it later this malenium! I did find my #19 spanner I was looking for.
