Hi all. My name is Neels and I was directed to this site via IMPI. Cool site!!! I am the proud owner of a 1974 Herbie (complete with the number 53 stickers and stripes) and is a member of the newly resurrected Northwest VW club based in Klerksdorp. I bought the car two months ago from a guy in Jozi. I live in Potchefstroom, Northwest, South Africa. I used to have a 1971 Beetle with a 2550cc type IV monster in it but sold it a while ago when my mechanic deserted me and left for Australia. There is a VW get together / show in Potchefstroom on 9 August (women's day) if anybody is interested.
I would have loved to introduce ol' Herb to you guys but can the URL thingy to work.
Keep up the good stuff!!
Neels

Welcome neels,
Was your mechanic Hermann by any chance?

Jip, it's Hermann...how'd you know?

I believe he was quite an active member of this site many moons ago...but he broke contact with everything that remotely has to do with South Africa. Pity though...Last what I heard of him, he had a website, and a ragtop VW type 1 which he is racing with again....Hey Ausie...are you out there somewhere?

Parts ??? you need to be more specific, cheap Brizilian parts are sold at hefty prices local by some, but I can put you onto dudes who sell cheap parts cheap, not VS selling cheap parts expensive. Let us know what you need, where are you?

I can believe that!!! This engine has been opened once since new and that was in 1972 after the second owners son broke some rings! Overhauled by german guy in Klerksdorp and still running very strong. Minor oil leaks nothing serious! Engine compartment rubber missing! Desperatly looking for new one!
