In the uk There isn't much choice but to use Donkie-drolle (compressed charcoal) or gas. I miss the rooikrans or kameeldoring Only wood you get here is big logs that just pretend to burn... used in fireplaces.

Ja, and ask my wife about the only wood I get here .....

What do I miss? Proper charcoal brickets. Here you get wood charcoal, but the problem is that it burns so HOT so quick... and by the time it is the right temp and you start to braai, they f'n burn out!! Hopeless!!! I end up taking the grill off of my Weber-copy braai and add more charcoal So one of these days I am going to swap over to Gas..... because I got no other option!!!

Now, I am just waiting for that promised Cadac Skottel Braai to hop into the post

The gas BBQ is king. Try and get a fire going in 6 inches of snow with a 20 mph wind and a windchill of -20 degree F, with the gas you turn a knob, hit a button and your fire is going. You will be eating in 20 or so minutes ( depend on your taste of redness of the meat) Give me gas any day.

Once you've gone gas, you won't go back.

I udnerstand where you lot coming from with the wood thing, but work it out, how much do you pay for a bag of charcoal/ wood, fire lighters/ jet fuel or diesel..........?

thats like saying you'd rather eat polony than fillet steak, because at the end of the day, its both meat....

Part of the charm is the fire and the sociality that goes with it...

2nd part I agree with 100%, but we socialise just fine around our braai/ bbq......I'm doing a B-day braai this weekend, I'll snap some shots for the skeptics...............
