Nice looking camper. I don't recognise the conversion, but the bus looks like a 71, not a 72.

Thanks Fig,
Paperwork says '72. I can't find any metion of this conversion on the net. It is not made of canvas. I'll open it up and take some pics this weekend.
Anybody have any idea what this might be worth? Have to put it on the insurance.

I like your Bus! :hangloose:

As for the insurance, I'd say try to push for R 30 000 replacement value, a conservative estimate IMHO.

I tend to agree with Fig with your Bus being a '71, rather than a '72. Bay window Buses of the 1972 model year are generally referred to as 'Crossovers'. In 1972, the shape of the rear vent changed, the tail lights were re-designed (bigger), and buyers had the option of twin carb Type 4 engine. Yet, the '72 still had the 'low light' indicators (below the headlights) which were replaced in '73 by the square front indicators above the headlights. Anything is however possible and it could for example be that your Bus was bought late '71 and only registered in '72. The chassis number (on your disk) should give the definite answer.

Compare the air vents of the two Bays in the pic below, a '72 to the left, and my own '71 to the right:

Sorry fig and pine. That's why I joined your forum. As I'm a newbie when it comes to ACVW's. Thanks for pointing it out. :-)
Chassis number2312137391

Nothing to apologise for. And the VIN matches 71 so we're all agreed. :D

On the bulkhead behind the driver's seat there should be a plate with a whole lot of numbers on it. Please post all the numbers or a pic of the plate here.

Looks like 231 213 7391?

There should be another plate with the M-codes as well, decode them here:

Yes, the M-code (option code) plate only contains obscure codes, no recognisable writing. They tell you about your bus's original spec. You'll find it on the other end of the bulkhead to the one pictured, which is your VIN plate.

M-Codes
1(7?)2 137 391
100 156 171 187 191

Does that sound right?

06 3 7600 TE 2340 11

Does that sound right?
12 137 391 = VIN (without the initial 23 signifying Type 2 Kombi; 1 = 1971, 2 = T2, 137 391 = sequential build number)
100 = Without VW emblem on front
156 = Heavy duty oil bath air cleaner
171 = Tubeless tyres
187 = RHD headlights
191 = belly plates for extra strengthening
H24 = Unknown (possibly preparation for camper conversion)
010 = Additional dust sealing for engine compartment
047 = reverse lights
095 = Blaupunkt "Wolfsburg" radio
0303 = Colour: Chianti red, 51 = interior colour: ?
06 3 = Build date: Week 6 Day 3 (Wed) (calendar year, not model syear)
7600 = Unknown
TE = Export code: Tourist delivery Europe (This means the bus was collected at the factory for a European tour before shipping to the buyer's home country)
234 = Model: Type 2, Kombi, RHD, sliding door left,
011 = 37kW/50hp 1600 engine, 4-speed manual

This is an interesting bus, as it was collected at the factory, and was prepared for camper conversion (H24, no nose emblem, belly plates to give strength for a hole in the roof for a pop-top). It was also apparently planned to end in SA with HD air filter and extra dust sealing of the engine.

Is there no manufacturer's plate anywhere in the bus to ID the camper kit?
