Tell me, did you re-do those rear grills, order them or did it come stock standard with the kit?
I am also very interested in the way you fixed the windscreen to the body.

Sure thing Thomas. The grills were sold by KCC. They are aluminium castings that needed a lot of filing and sanding to get them nice and clean. Mine is the LWB body (standard length beetle floorpan) which has a ridge that forms the front of the dash against which the windscreen mounts. The SWB does not look the same there. You are very welcome to ask away.

I also have the LWB, I found this out when I took the measurements from Callookers spyder for the "cage the goes around the motor for the rear to swivel and made one up only to find that it is to long so I made it tilt the other way.
The price for the screen is good considering that Universal products want R5,500 (but then again it is apparently the same as the one that goes on the 356).

I have also made my own rear grills, I found some nice looking "mesh" that my father in law had in the garage, made a templet and cut them out, now I just have to find something to go around the edge.

I am hoping to go to Mc nuaghtans at the end of the month to get some hinges and latches.

Do you mean that the clamshell opens from back to front? How do you get it around the engine?

Mmm,,, I have not fitted the motor yet it has not even been built yet, but now that you mention it I think I may have a problem will have to relook at that.

When I bought my kit it was from a guy who basically put the body on the floorpan and made the clamshell hinge like you did against the cab. That can't work. The clamshell fits around the engine. That is why they made it to hinge at the back. You are welcome to come and measure the cage on mine and copy that.

But I will have to build the motor firdt and then fit it before I do anything, luckily the motor is going tomorrow for assembly.
I plan to put then whole car together first to see if I am happy with the way it looks and the strip it down before spraying which I hope to have done by year end.

FYI. There's a guy advertising imported glass windscreens on Gumtree for old classics. I bought one for the 356 from him here in Cape Town, I think the last price I checked was R 2 300-00. it fitted perfectly into my KCC Frame on my Speedster. I don't think tho it should be used on the RSK's. I remember mine (Also a KCC Car) had a plexi wrap around windscreen with a much lower rake than the Speedster Windscreen. Even Mars's screen has a lower rake. I wouldn't try use a Speedy's screen, it will just not look right.
And remember, the RSK was always more of a racer, so the lightweight plexi screen was done for a reason.

I was contemplateing getting a sheet of plexiglass and making the screem myself but that would have cost around R1200.00

Making the screen yourself is always an option but then there is the risk that you may bugger it up completely and need to redo it. I am just happy I managed to find the guys who can do it.

Beautiful car, my dad had a replica when I was a kid. Loved that car!
