Re: 67 Panelvan

Post by Donovan D »

I have managed to get both sides in and flush, the springplates looks like its being pulled towards the inside(towards the gearbox) but the kombi is still on jacks with no wheels so hopefully when it comes down it will straighten up.

Questions:

1.If I look at the axles of the gearbox from the side(sitting where the brake drum is and looking towards the gearbox) the one side looks straight, going from the spring plates into the gearbox. The other side looks like its skew. Where it is mounted on the spring plate is much more towards the front of the kombi than where it goes into the gearbox. I cant really push it back more as the holes in the springplates dont allow. Should the axles be straight or should they be at an angle ?

2. Would it make a difference if the radius of the tyres differ from the front ones to the rear ones? The tyres I want is bigger at the back than the front, now a lot of the tyre places say I cant run it like that, Does it make a difference?

You can use different diameter wheels on front axle. Only problem then is which spare wheel.
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.
Do'nt assume anything- (While doing fault-finding).

The specially modified swingaxle tubes needed for this conversion should have their springplate mountings much closer to the wheels compared to a standard swing axle tube from a beetle.
Often they are made up by using short end castings from a 1200 beetle and some cutting/welding to combine them with outer tubes from a late long-axle beetle. Hope the ones you bought were made up correctly.

Thanks for the info Dawie
I did a lot of research on all this and according to what I have and everything I got from Aaron at Widefive.net
Some of the guys has told me that when I get wheels on and the bus off the jacks that they everything will ease in and settle the way they should be.I hope so !
Will take some pics tomorow morning and post it.

This bus as taken me four years to get to where it is now, I have had problems with about everything that I redid so far, with stuff not fitting or not getting parts , not getting my stuff to line-up, or just the PO that drilled holes everywhere for wires or decided to grind and weld stuff, and I need to fix his :bn: , its not been easy and today felt like I have had it and want to sell the volk-stront, the closer I get to finishing the more I feel like Ive had it

A bit of slow progress at the moment, Im playing around with the accessories,
The bus settled at 20cm from the ground, I still need to put the wheels on at the back and level it, measured it against my sisters car and I might be able to squeeze out another 3cm max, then Im at the same height as a mini cooper and clio
Sprayed and fitted the Fulton sunvisor today. Anybody have any ideas for the middle support? the piece of aluminium is just there to keep it up at the moment, would like it if I could make it strong enough without the middle support,
