There was an article in the CAR magazine about 10 years ago on the Uri. Very cool toy to play with on the dunes :P

But for some it will be more like me that does a round trip from PE to Jhb to George to PE which will be more in the region of 3000km's.It will come nowhere close to a trip to Namibia.

From me just to Windhoek it is 1900km's.
Geez that is quite a trip! Our little trip around west/north Namibia was also around 1500k's, i just about packed an entire engine in spare parts for the trip! Was the 1st time we took such along road trip and i didnt know what to expect, was amazed at how well the old bus managed the trip. The only thing that went wrong was the speedocable pulled out out of the front wheel hub, i mean we passed new 4x4 vehicles that were stranded on the side of the road... in a 1969 bus, that was really something special! Would love to do it again sometime!

Do you know the Uri?

The designer is a family friend and they have a holiday home in Yzerfontein.

I miss Namibia.
Yeah i know the uri quite well, have worked on several of them already. Landcruiser based chassis with a home built body... they sold many of them as they are really good farm vehicles aswell as useful for the mines etc.
I sometimes wish i lived in SA to expierence all the cool road trips and get togethers that you guys have... but i would really miss Namibia too much!

My wife use to stay in Windhoek and she would love to go there on holiday again.

A lot of people have the impression that it's just desert, but I heard that Windhoek is a very green city.

What tyres do you have on, and did you deflate them? I found in my little 'dune expedition' the past week that my Bay almost got stuck (185's at the back, 175's in front) in loose sand, whereas the buggy used to fly over loose sand. That was also one of the main reasons why Bruce Meyers developed the Manx - his old splitty was too heavy for loose sand when going on his surfing expeditions.

Im running normal 185 road tyres... not exactly the best but i did deflate them. The occasional getting stuck here and there just adds to the fun  we try stick to hard stuff as much as possible tho.
Decemeber holiday time at Swakopmund is beach buggy territory, there are literaly hundreds of them scattered all over the dunes and the beach. Its like they were built for the Namib desert 8)
I havent come across a suitable one forsale yet (they sell real fast here) but one day...

Windhoek definitely isn't a big place, probably around the size of Centurion, but it is a green city (during the rainy season anyway, haha) It is very clean, low crime and basically just a rustig paced city. I guess you could say once you come here you get Windhoeked, plus we have the best beer in the world! :drunks:

My father in-law used to own a Toyota 4x4 that a friend of his rolled on the dunes just outside Windhoek.
