Saw this beauty next to Volkspares Jet Park this morning, it just got back from a final dress rehearsal at Zwarkops, ready for Kyalami on Saturday! :hangloose:

A 9 Hour revival

Kyalami will echo to the sound of classic race cars as the 9-Hour Revival celebrates 50 years since birth of the legendary endurance race on Saturday.

Around 90 cars have entered ranging from brutal Porsche 917, Lola T70 and GT40 replicas to the likes of Minis, Escorts and Alfas.

Must see cars for any motoring fan include two genuine Gunston Peranas, the ex Tony Viana Winfield BMW 745i, a Ferrari 250GTM and a genuine 9-Hour BDA powered Escort.

A collection of classic bikes and cars will go under the Stephan Welz & Co Sothebys hammer, and South African legends like Peter de Klerk, Terry Townsend, Koos Swanepeol, Tony Martin and Peter Gough will be in action.

The days racing will be split into a number of sprint events before culminating in 3-Hour endurance race.

As is traditionally the case, classes will be separated by capacity but all will be on track at the same time.


While the first 9-hour was run at the old Grand Central in November 1958, the race switched to Kyalami when the original track opened in 1961.

Jacky Ickx, David Piper, Brian Redman, Richard Attwood, Mario Andretti, Hans Stuck, Derek Bell and Clay Regazzoni were just some of those who won the 9 Hour over the years for the likes of Porsche, Ferrari, Matra, Mirage and more.

Racing is scheduled to start at 9am, gate entry is R30 per adult and children under 12 get in free

I understand they go for about R1 million completely built from Peter Bayley / Bayley Edwards?

They buy a oldish monster 911 and build everything into the 917.

Bailey Edwards Cars has added the famous Le Mans winning Porsche 917 to its range of models. They are produced as close as possible to the original priceless racing cars of the mid 1960's and early 1970's.

The Porsche 917 was renowned for winning 2 years in a row - 1970 and 1971 - at Le Mans. One of the outstanding features of the car was the top speed of 395 km/h (246mph) it attained on the Mulsanne Straight. This in comparison to the previous year's winner, the GT40, at 340km/h (which in itself was very fast!).

The BE 917 LM is available in turnkey minus and drive away form. The specifications to which the cars are being built are based on the original drawings, with improvements to
enhance the safety, cockpit space and drivability of the car, using modern materials and equipment.

The cars are produced to full race specification and hence are not suitable for being driven on the road.

I think that was the higest ever achieved at LeMans, soon after that they put a cicane in the straightto slow cars down and they changed the rules to slow cars down.
I removed an interesting story from my computer recently on the early 917 s.
The early cars had aluminium tube frames which cracked a lot with catastrophic results. It was so bad at one time that all the Porsches contracted drivers plus the back up drivers were in hospital and they had to advertise for drivers.
They tried to prevent accidents by pressurising the tubes and added a pressure gauge on the dash. The drivers were then instructed to stop when the pressure drop as the would indicate a craking frame tube.
