I bought my first Bay.

Post by beetlefanatic »

Hi guys, I have bought myself a 1979 Bay window today. Unfortunately I'm sitting at the airport on my way out of the country, so I can't even play with it until July.

Hopefully it won't be my last bus. I'm still hoping there is a split with my name on it.

Nose badge is one of many things on the list. Bus is in good condition, but I'd like to go through everthing.

I've been thinking along those lines, but I think I need to visit Mr Impi when I get back and see what he can do for me. Then I can keep it aircooled. If I have to go watercooled, I'll take the 2.1 wbx that's coming out of my DC and put that in.

After thinking I might never get to register the bay, I got confirmation from Bugger today that the previous owner has finally produced the papers. Now it can get a roadworthy and finally get registered. Then the fun can begin.

Thanks for the trouble Bugger. I owe you bigtime! :hangloose:

Some of the things I plan for the bus is to completely strip the body and get it freshly painted. I'm still deciding on a single colour or two tone. But it will probably be a blue metallic like this
Show15ZN.jpg
As it will be a mild custom bus, I have already sourced a caravelle interior that will be recovered and installed to replace the tired original seats. Along with this, lots of sound deadening material, new panels, carpets and headliner. Aircon from a caravelle and a nice entertainment system will also be on the list.
I am toying with the idea of making a custom dash from fibreglass and having it recovered in leather.
Outside I want some chrome bits like the bumpers and wheels. A bit of lowering front and back and discs allround is also planned. I haven't found nice wheels yet so please keep a look out for me. Chris, my steed is in need of a nice set of fuchs!
Engine wise it will get a mild 2.4 type 4 with fuel injection. I was tempted to go watercooled, but common sense prevailed. For the time being it will go into storage until Dec. Then I'll take it apart and get it painted.

In the meantime I'm having a drink or two to celebrate! :drunks: :drunks:
