The rod ratio with the 74mm crank and the 139mm conrods is 1.88 - exactly where I want it. I do not believe you can flow heads without a flow bench - you can easily end up with heads that flow worse than stock. Second - the cam I ordered has 0.49 lift on the lobe - so stainless valves + double, or heavy duty valve springs are a must. On the LE200 this is already done AND bigger valves. For slightly more you can get Porsche replica heads NOW we're talking!
Nah - I think maybe I should find out what the price is on JE pistons - get the compression height reduced by maybe 4mm then stick with cast iron cylinders - shim out by 5 or 5.5mm and go for those heads.

Electronic ignition - this is the electronic distributor I bought from GW - I removed the gear at the bottom and took the whole assembly out of the housing. Next took the old points etc and whole shaft out of the old distributor. Cut the new one's shaft to length and drilled a 4mm hole through it making sure the rotor is angled right. then the new assembly went into the old housing, put in the shims/washers and knocked in the little pin to keep it all together. Then I simply relocated the holes to secure the inside platform and cut the opening for the vacuum advance and plastic connector block.
Oh yeh - also got the original one "just in case"
Only problem with that is - the harness plug doesn't fit the older original dist.

I know - the tin looks like sh!t at the moment, but I'll hopefully sort that out with some fiberglass.
The price was R850 for everything (dist,coil,tci and harness) If I remember correctly it was just over R400 for the distr. (something like R420 or R425)
Before there's a rush to buy golf distributors - I've NOT tested this yet. There might be some hidden problems that I don't know about. So be aware.

I have a spare kombi dizzy that I picked up a while ago as well as the empi electronic ignotion conversion kit, so I've covered, but this idea seems like a nice one.
Your fan housing is on the right track but if I could give you some advice is to get a nother set of top covers and cut the corners thet goes over number 1 and 3 then 1 fits over 4 and 3 fits over 2 so the air gets forced through the head and barrel finns and not just flow over the heads and barrels at 2 and 4 if you usderstand what I mean then the other std plates that also keeps the air tight against the barrels down to the bottom also helpd cooling
Saw a few sets laying at Volkspares the other day buz me if you need some info and the Yanks also has used the Type 4 fan in the Type 1 fan housings with some modyfing Keep it up you got some good Ideas there with your project
Thanks for the offer - I do have a spare set of top covers - and that is really an excellent idea to use the 2nd for the front cylinders Bugger. I never thought of that. Did consider using the type 1 tin, but I don't want to ruin the beetle motor.
Enlarge the pic of my Oval and you can maybe see what I did in 96 when I built this one I also fitted the back part of the wider fan housing for the wider twinport fan
You will see that on Cylinder 2 I used the bottom plate of number 3 that bolts on to the fan housing as I mentioned to keep the air as close to the fins as possible
That is one seriously cool oval I'll continue with the motor next weekend - at the moment working 12 hours, holidays, weekend enall enall. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I'm definitely going to do that mod with the tin.
I can see why These Weber IDF's are worth selling your daughter for. MAN!! these are SERIOUS carbs. I'm tempted to leave the whole turbo " rig-ma-role" out and just put these on. BUT truth be told - I'll give the turbo setup all I've got - the T3/T4 turbo is in the mail and I still think the DCD's with the 2nd venturi on "rich" will work better.

The GW golf distributor mod works great I have done something similar when I changed to engine management, modified the shaft and the advance to be able to control the timing via the computer. I've had no problems with it in the past few years.
