Lets talk about lightly modded 1600 TP engines
Hi guys
With my bug currently in progress ,id like to talk about my motor.
Ill be pulling the motor to replace all seals and gaskets soon .
Its a stock 1600 TP and will be adding the following
Dellorto 36DRLA Twins
Compufire electronic ignition
38mm Empi merged header with PhatBoy silencer (this will be made by local silencer shop)
Stinger will be fitted to annoy the neighbours occasionally
I dont want the car super fast as it will be handed down to my son in the next year or so. I just want to have abit of cruising fun with my wife for now .

Re: Lets talk about lightly modded 1600 TP engines
light mods are a very personal thing, different things for different guys.
My engine renewal for the Hahn is hoping to include the following.;-
MP9 ECU from a Golf/Jetta mapped for the beetle engine
Fuel injectors from the Golf range
Golf spark bank
Ported heads
Mild 4 into 1 exhaust.
Counterweight crank.
1776 barrels and pistons.
But thats just me,
Your set up will be exciting as well.
Thanks for sharing.

Re: Lets talk about lightly modded 1600 TP engines
that compufire setup will leave you stranded at some point. I've had 4 and they all failed in under 1000km.
I now have one paired up with a Gtech unit and it works well, going on roughly 3000km now.
With your carbs and exhaust, to add fun, ported and modified heads and slight lightening of the flywheel will make the car very enjoyable to drive.

Re: Lets talk about lightly modded 1600 TP engines
To be perfectly honest, I cannot remember at this point. It isn't difficult, but without referring to my bus, I'm drawing a mind blank right now. I'll only be home in Feb again...
Also, it's not something that we endorse yet.
I've said for years that it isn't the heat that kills the compusfire style units, but rather the load. Pretty much everyone else disagrees with me. But I'm proving it...

Re: Lets talk about lightly modded 1600 TP engines
Feb is a bit far off, so I’m anxious to try to figure it out. Maybe you’ll remember something. G-Tech replaces the capacitor, so is wired as per supplied diagram. Accuspark replaces points and will now act as a low current switch.Accuspark Red wire is connected to G-Tech green wire and black goes to ground. Am I on the right track?

thats pretty much it.
I dont have the wiring diagram with me right now, so cannot confirm the colours. As you said, it replaces the points

BTW, we have plenty G-Tech and new bosch coils in stock. My wife has access to them, so you can still get them without needing to wait.

Re: Lets talk about lightly modded 1600 TP engines
Thanks, I’m already running G-Tech in my bug and have an Accuspark in a spare distributor. I’m quite happy with the G-Tech in the bug, but I’m contemplating eliminating points all together. I’ll let it marinate in my head for a while, before I take the plunge.

Hi Tony. It’s Feb so I assume you’re back home? Could you please confirm the wiring in your bus? I don’t want to fry anything.Tony Z wrote: ↑Mon Dec 27, 2021 1:17 pmTo be perfectly honest, I cannot remember at this point. Will check on wiring as soon as I get a chance.
Otherwise, you are welcome to visit me early tomorrow morning and we can check it out together
