1969 vw type 3 fastback - No power

Post by R.Ephraim »

Hi

I have a 69 fastback automatic.
I recently overhauled my engine and upgraded to electric ignition...

We test drove for the 1st time 3 days ago. The car has no power at all. It changes over from 1st to 2nd but delays when going to 3rd. Also kick down seems too sensitive when placing the pedals flat to the ground.

Power is very low. foot is flat on the pedal to the max but now extra power.

Need some advise to solve the problem.

Thanks
R

You need to look at your valve timing and tappet gaps.

You may have hydraulic lifters and these you set totally different to normal lifters.

You also need to test your compression on all 4 cylinders.

Then your electronic timing needs to be set

You may also have air leaks around your carb's and manifolds.

Test them with easy start or Carb cleaner.

Have you checked the ATF level of the gearbox?

I would hazard a guess that your electronic ignition setup is the cheap and nasty kit that is renowned for failing
Put the stock points setup back in to test. If this solves your problem, I'll sell you an ignition system that actually works.

This is a good point, it needs to be check once at tempperature, with the car idling in neutral
