Variant 412 gearbox input seal?

Post by mhsmuts »

Hi guys,

I have the 412 ready for the bull run and it seems I have now picked up a leak between the engine and gearbox. (Visible leak)

I suspect the seal on the gearbox side rather than the crankshaft seal. (Smell of oil, cleanliness and the fact that the motor is brand new)

Where would I find a replacement seal? And is it a challenge to replace?

Thanks!

Input shaft seal leak transmission side...
Transmission oil = thick with a strong distinct "stenchy" smell.
Newly rebuilt engines sometimes leak oil at the flywheel side if seal was not installed properly- (incorrect depth, slightly skew, or not of best quality).

From searches it seems 411/412 4 speed manual "type 004" transmission uses same input shaft seal as type 1 (beetle) and kombi boxes.
Timken part 222050, skf 7940, Payen NJ989, Victor Reinz 66621 and 67410.
Dimensions inner 20mm, outer 40.23mm, (interference fit, to fit inside 40mm). Width 7mm. Nitrile material. Always best to compare sample before you buy.
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.
Do'nt assume anything- (While doing fault-finding).

Interesting fact - this year was the 10th Bull Run in South Africa. Of the 10 winners, two of them were 412 Variants.

This year was 160 cars.

Thanks for the pics. I can imagine and see the fun the 411 gave you.
Look after them and they look after you.
