Sambas in South Africa are good for only 2 things: showing off and sunburn.

Re: My 72 restoration
Hi all!
I thought it is time to do an update. Better late than never.
A few more things have been done besides enjoying the hell out of my van. ie Days out, camping and shows.
Fitted new inner and outer rear torsion bar rubbers, lifting the back one tooth on the spline while i was where.
Fitted all round new shocks.
New steering damper
New steering rubber coupling.
Welded up a new accelerator leaver, the one just under the peddle. (It broke as I was reversing into the drive returning from a weekend road trip through a few mountain passes.)
Fitted some new 195/14c tyres all round
Cleaned and stone chipped the whole chassis, Then sprayed it all with old engine oil. In every little spot I could find. Followed by a good trip along a gravel road.
I have also just finished my vespa rebuild.
I am thinking of changing my dual standard 2l carbs to dual weber carbs. Can any body comment on that idea.
Oh and almost forgot my van was in the newspaper. Nothing big but coooooooooool!

Re: My 72 restoration
No exact reason was just wondering what can be gained from fitting weber over the solex. Nothing really wrong with mine but they don't like to run with pancakes on. They run better with the big air box and I like the bling stuff. And I know weber carb like pancakes or to say more air flow.Muderick wrote:Whats your reason for wanting to change from the Solex 2 l carbs Branden?

Re: My 72 restoration
I have had the 36 Weber IDF's on my one bus for a few years now. There is an improvement in power delivery and increase in power, but as you tend to use a little more power the fuel consumption isn't any better. If I had a good set of Solex's I would leave it, if its a real bust set, I would probably rather spend money on the Webers instead of reconditioning. Most of the time mechanics don't know how to work on the twin Solex's and will rather state they are junk because they don't understand how they need to function.

I think I will stick with my solex for now then. I have 3 pairs so they will last me a while!

Re: My 72 restoration
Time for a update.
Well been busy rebuilding the original 2l engine to go back in as I did not fanncey dealing with engine number chance. Doing a bit more work this time round on it as I am starting to get to know the van a bit more now. Main block is done with new main an cam bearings. Had the camshaft redone and followers reground. Still waiting for my piston and sleaves from reboring with oversized pistions. Also still waiting for my heads that are getting new seats, stems and all new studs. When it is all ready to go back in I will fit a new clutch too.
Oh and putting a set of dual twin choke carbs on when that is all done just for the hell of it!
I will add pic some time soon!
