Next on the agenda is to make a proper air box to route fresh air into the filter and a duct for fresh air to the cooling fan.

I've also ordered a MGL 4 channel thermocouple display to keep better track of the EGT's and CHT's. Maybe couple 2x egt's to cylinder 2-4 and 2x CHT's to cylinder 1 - 3

The temperatures will then determine if I do need to look at a bigger AR exhaust housing to relieve the back pressure

Changing a couple of things that I want to try on the next track day.

In process moving of the air filter into the cabin and getting some HD hose clamps for the boost pipes.

Both the water sprayer pumps stopped working, I presume they stopped at the last track day. So, new plan. I'm done trying to make the sprayers work from windscreen washer pumps. Got a water meth pump and filter during the week, and fitted it onto the water tank.

I still need to neaten everything up, but it seems like the pump will work just fine for my application. When you start it up it sounds like a small vegetable garden being irrigated in the back on the intercooler  I still need to check water flow to see if the 5l tank will hold up for 15 minutes worth of track time.

Some progress

The air filter was located inside the engine bay, it is now inside the cabin to try get some cooler air into the engine.

I should get the HD hose clamps today and can then start assembling everything to go track day on Sunday.

We took the turbo beetle out to Zwartkops yesterday for some testing.

Image

Intake air temps seem pretty stable, EGT's are still quite high and the 4th gear is way too short. . So bigger AR housing ordered and gear ratios are being sourced. The other thing that might become a problem soon is the braking bias... the front is braking harder than the back causing big lockups going into turn 8, so sorting that would also help the lap times.

Everything else seem to be working pretty good. I managed to do a couple of laps in the mid 12's and one in the 11's  1:11,9 to be exact. I'm over the moon!!!

Image

I think mid 11 laps are possible with some new rubber and taller gear ratios to use the torque.

On the 2nd session I had a guy with a Porsche come past me on a cool down lap, so decided to follow him for a bit and see if the beetle can keep up... I would be pissed if I owned the Porsche. The lap behind the Porsche was a 1:12,2. He does have a HP advantage over me, but the beetle is still on low boost.

The gear sets should arrive in about two weeks, so while we wait I decided to modify the rear panels of the beetle so the entire rear clip bolts off to make taking the engine out easier. Now the engine with intakes and turbo can be removed as one unit that makes it a whole lot easier and faster to work on.

Tonight I'll just finish it all off and start taking the engine out.
