I think I've got Kombi fever.

Post by vw59beetle »

For those of you that know me would know that I'm just as crazy about air cooled cars like all of you.One of the cars that's been missing from my collection has been a split Kombi. In 2000 a Norwegian friend and myself drove a 1959 Kombi named Mabel from SA to Norway( you can read the story on my website at http://www.aircooledwonders.com/feature ... he-59-way/ ) Unfortunately I was not able to bring her back to South Africa, but hopefully this dream will come true one day.
Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Fig my dream to own a split bus came true today when I picked up a 1957 Kombi from the lovely Vaalplasie. I fell in love the first time I saw this super clean bus.My plan is to get her mechanically sound and then give her what she deserves, a new skin of dove blue paint.
I am really looking forward to relive some great memories of early travelling days.

Loading her up at the idyllic Vaalplasie.

Safe and sound at her new home. Tomorrow I'll start by stripping her down.

Sambas in South Africa are good for only 2 things: showing off and sunburn.

I think any collection will always have some gaps to fill. My dream is to own a Porsche 550 A still.

BAIE geluk met die kombi Wernher, dit is stunning. Gaan jy nou die geel Baywindow verkoop?

Is daar 'n hout kassie agter in die kombi?

Hennie.

I've taken off the front suspension and gearbox to clean the bottom of the car. Lots of Potchefstroom red sand coming out after many years of use. I also took the tank out and as suspected after 20 plus years of standing, it needs a bit of cleaning.
