Turbo type 4

Post by Risenga »

Hi.! everyone guys i need some advice, i'm planning to build a 2.0 type 4 for a beetle mod, now i have seen 1 post here which confused me, apparently the 1700 and 1800 are said to be the best and they also rev smooth, now i wanted to build a 2.0 turbo type 4, so i need to know before i buy the engine because i have already got a good price on a 2.0, and what type of fueling will maximize power and still be reliable, any suggestions or any previously proven combination would be appreciated.

Buy fueling I assume you mean carb or EFI? EFI in more than double the price of carbs. The majority of your Max power is gonna come from the internals crank, cam, pistons and boost. Fueling to me falls under the details. The real important thing for you now is to get a solid casing. MAKE SURE there are no cracks in it. If you can have it tested before you buy it I would suggest that. I there is no difference between the two engine sizes when it comes to the casing. Smooth reving comes from various factors including a well balanced motor, timing etc.

Remember yo can only have 2 of the following 3.
Power
Reliability
Cheep.

Reliable Power is not Cheep.
Cheep Reliability has no Power.
Cheep Power is not reliable.

Before you start with anything have you completed a project plan & budget?
What is your budget?
Now double it and you might be in the ball parks regarding cost.

HI I got a 2L Type 4 with Upright Conversion Turbo using a 36Turbo DEllorto Carb Blow through set up complete as it comes out of a Split bus for sale It was running but the bus had a Auto matic transmission so just as it changed to a higher gear the boost fell off
So for a Manual transmission it will work wonders R20K motor,Turbo,Intake manifold with Carb and Exhaust system complete as it came out of the Bus
Adapterplates Available for Rotary in Beetle and others aswell
And Special Boxes built for Rotary Conversions and Scubies

Hi type four engine respond well to turbocharging and the internals is more than up for the task.
the main concern is valves and seats: replace both
second concern is head sealing and this is where 1700 cylinders start to make sense as there is more meat in the heads but 1800 and 2 liters share the same bore size so not much difference there. I would go for a turbo grind or stock reground cam (never re use a cam in a type four) bigger ss 42 x 36/7 valves and new seats porting on exhausts slightly and a t3/4 turbo with programmable injection. if funds allow crank fire ignition and ceramic coating on the std pistons. machine 5mm thick washers for the heads and torque to std specs leeve out the factory gaskets and you will have a reliable 150hp plus use the 228mm bus clutch

http://www.dragtimes.com/video-viewer.p ... aA&feature
I believe that this clip represents a seriously fast beetle with a turbo type four
I was involved with the build and eventually it would do 12's on the quarter with an Et of 220 800m times were 233kmh
The engine had a stock crank.
stock rods with new bolts.
stock KS pistons
Reground normally aspirated cam (richie jute vw 13) This was the only cam we could find at the time.
engine balanced
stock wbx dizzy with advance locked
turbo was based on a Garrett4 with an external wastegate
200mm flywheel with double diaphram clutch and button plate
40mm weber side draft carb
home made manifolding
valves were from the nissan stable and single chevy valvesprings

Engine was boosted as high as we could get and gave surprising reliability
Oil pump was a used type four for a long time.

Obviously balancing porting and care during assembly was paramount.

In my opinion the lower end is as strong as anything you can buy so save your money there.
Get a web turbo cam from the states and cry once (for the price)

I would also rater piece together an engine from selected used parts than buy an unknown complete engine I can probably help with most core parts
