Thanks for the info guys, will keep this in mind if I dont come right. I've already paid a deposit for my adjusters; I specially ordered the weld on adjusters so that I don't have to cut the beam.calooker wrote:I got adjusters R420 for the set R30 if you need them shipped
I guess I can wait until the 26th; got to finish the pan first

Re: Projek '63
Beware the "weld on" adjusters, that are not so simple, removal of the original beam centre support for the leafs is a bastard of a job, you will land up having to cut the beam anyway to do it, then also drilling and the cutting of a slot is also requred, to add insult to injury the replacement centre support is the wrong size to actually do it's job properly, and the inner dia of the serated teeth deos not match that of the beam. I tried them once some 5 years ago, not again.Retro13 wrote:Sciyota wrote:They're only getting stock on the 26th.Phone Flat four racing if I pay tomorrow morning ill have it by Monday from cape townThanks for the info guys, will keep this in mind if I dont come right. Hey Pierre, I was the P O. Difficult call to sell her but couldnt have gone to a better home. Ferdi is a good bloke and is doing the car just how I wanted to. I just didnt have the time as my family has grown since i started the project. As you can see, the gearbox is as I got it from you. Will be keeping a keen eye on this build thread. Good luck Ferdi....looking good!

Re: Projek '63
Little progress today....
Got my beam adjusters on Friday-thanks calooker
and got my mig welder yesterday so I wanted to weld them in...
Got to the shop this afternoon, wanted to do a couple of practice welds with the mig before I tackle the beam.. guess what!.. no gas
So I weld them in with the arc welder, will get some gas tomorrow for when I'm welding the pan etc
pics

next, finish wire wheeling beam and get new seals(waiting for a friend whos bringing a set from capetown)then assemble and start to tackle the rust
Thanks for looking

Re: Projek '63
Looks like a great project! I'm sure the wide rear wheels will look cool.
I'm going for a similar look for my 59. Low and norrow in front and wide at the back. Had a narrowed beam made up for mine, but it was not a great job. Think I might just go back to the stock beam with adjusters like yours

Re: Projek '63
Little update
So when I bought the car I got Empi repair panels for the rear quarters of the pan,I then attempted to replace the rusted parts sections.Afer repairing the right side I wasn't happy with the outcome. You could see that the panel was repaired. So I was on the hunt for another pan but could not find a rust free early pan with the knob heater control.
And proper pan halves is a tad pricey for me.(allot actually).I then thought what better way than to replace the pan halves with genuine VW pressed steel from latter pans
I then placed a wanted ad on the forum and got a pan for free from Datwagen where the left side was perfect- painstakingly removed all the spot welds and welded the left-side on my pan.
The other day on my way to the shop I spotted a bakkie with 2 pans on the back presumably on his way to a scrap metal dealer.Asked him to pull over and bought the 1 pan that was still rust free at the battery side (with the battery hold down strap in place)
Friday last week I removed the right side of that pan and today I welded it in place.Only problem was that the pedal area is not the same so I had to cut that piece out and fab a replacement piece.I did everything to look as stock as possible and no taking shortcuts.
some pics
1st before pic's of the rust

My first repair attempt

My template for the pedal location

The measurements I made

What I started with this morning

The pan halve that I removed from the later pan

The rust free battery area

Plug welds

The panel I made for pedal area

Also somewhere along this beetle's life someone replaced the clutch cable and butchered the tunnel

I then made a clean cut got it more straight and made a removable cover.I also removed the gearlock and closed up the holes

I only have to replace the left side jack stand and remove all the tar. Then I can seam seal it-stone chip-and paint
Thanks for looking
