Camo BAJA in the Making

I recently - procured this little beast - after SELLING A BICYCLE ---??? :lol:

I am going to redo the little silver bug..
So far Ive stripped motor out
I need to replace COOLING COVERS - PUSHROD TUBES - MAIN PULLET - FUEL PUMP - TAPPET COVERS - MAIN OIL SEAL , CLUTCH KIT -- ALL REAR LIGHTS
SPEEDO FUEL GAUGE - WHEELS TYRES FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS , FUEL TANK LEVEL - SPEEDO - SEATS - SEAT BELTS - CUBBY HOLE --
And thats all after first day stripping pics to follow

Stripped and on new tyres n Wheels
Stripping engine and looking at new bits as i buy them ...

looks like the body is still in good condition
watch out for those empi distributor caps they look nice but they not all that great
keep a good one handy
the engine looks nice 8)

I've heard bad things about quite a number of EMPI dress up ..items
Should I avoid their Bolt on Tappet covers ..
I will keep the original dizzy cap .. In the bonnet as a saftey..
I managed to get a faily decent 4 into 1 black baked enamel exhaust..
I have coated the 14" front and 15" rear wheels with Satin black coating
Im planing on loading pics on weekend .. The big chunky rear wheels and smaller fronts already
Make a massive difference ..
I'm aiming for this look with a red black motor like this ...
Anyone know if there is a company doing skins for beetles ?

looking good.
As slak mentioned... that distributer cap will leave you walking. Put a stock one on and keep the clear one in the glove-box. Then if you at a show or want to show off, quickly swap the two for the bling. If you have to drive with it, go to the nearest petrol station and switch them out again.

you beat me to it... same thing as I was saying. But yea, bolt on covers do have a tendency to leak, stock is pretty much the best you can have.

Just so you know, thats a type 4 engine (think late kombi).
The skins you are talking about??? If you mean the cooling tin, just take it all off, clean it up of all the gunk and oil and send it to have it powder coated.

Hi The bolt on Tappet covers are much better than the normal clip on chrome ones you get with the dress up kit

Hi

I have the covers - but the previous owner had a fetish with odd size bolts - nuts - and a torque wrench --
The covers over the cycl were so tight -- he cracked chunks out of the covers around the nuts holding down -- so i need to replace these covers --or braze a washer over the chunks missing --
If you have 2 covers - id like to buy them - or i will have them brazed --

Great idea on the camo look.
Skins I think he is refering to the "stick on" wraping that gets done now days.
The best covers you can get are the original German items & bails, can't be beat, just get them painted, a lot cheaper and they do the job.
If you insist on Bolt ons I have a new set of polished ally covers R400 for the set with all gaskets / seals.
Another thing I noted, the adjustable push rod tubes .... will be leaking in no time, again stock items are the best, so if you going to pull the heads at any time change them.
For what it's worth, ignorance has no limits ......
