No progress on the body this week, but it’s back at home now after carting it around on Friday.

I decided to start with the licensing a bit earlier on this project that at least when it’s ready to drive, it is actually licenced. As I hired the trailer to take the bus home, I tried to sort out the licensing by taking it over to the police clearance, but alas, I got a load of grief and this was due to some new changes since 01 September regarding some micro-dot efforts that have to be sprayed onto the bus. It’s a new form of identifying the vehicle as well as mechanical components as it is applied all over the vehicle.

Anyway, after back and forth trips between the weigh bridge, traffic department and police clearance, I seem to have made some head way. I still have to get the weight certificate, so hopefully after that I can get all the documents together to send in to have the bus registered on the system.
It’s going to have to be registered as a build-up vehicle as it appears it was never on the system before. It still has South West Africa number plates, so pretty doubtful it was ever introduced.

Will however just have to wait and see what happens after sending the documents in.

Otherwise, just been busy on the mechanical side. The exhaust is now finally complete, I am real happy with how the tailpiece came out. Here’s it below.

The brakes are nearly complete, all the new flexible hoses have been fitted, all the re-sleeved cylinders and brake shoes fitted and the rest was just cleaned up and assembled.



Fuel tank was cleaned and fitted. Gearbox side is also complete after new axle boots, axle seal kits and all the nuts and bolts cleaned up.

The rims are also completed after I sprayed the final coat during the week. I took the new tyres to be fitted too, and I am rather impressed with how nice the wheels came out.



I have also fitted the new shocks, this turned out to be quite surprise (the purchasing) that we actually had all 4 of these old stock oil filled Armstrong shock absorbers at the factory, they had been lying there for years and forgotten about. At least I know I wont have any exploding gas shock absorbers on this bus. My fleetline has popped a set of these Monroe gas shocks already on the first gravel road I hit, while I went through 5 sets in just over a year on my white Baywindow before ditching the lot for an old used set of oil filled ones, hence I am pretty glad to have found these old ones.

Nice work, beware the fresh paint under the wheel bolts, they tend to come loose, some thread locker (locktite) will sort it, removing the paint from under the bolts will be too painfull to do to fresh good looking paint.

Didn't get up to too much this weekend, but the bus is ready to roll when the engine is in.

I now have working brakes, what a mission, struggled at first to get anything happening from the master cylinder, took it back to the place that reconditioned it, they checked it out and claimed it was working fine. Fitted it again but still no luck. I was rather frustrated by now, but took it out again and stripped the unit myself, all did seem in order according to the book, so I simply just assembled it again and at least this time after fitting it it actually worked. I really didn't do anything to the unit, maybe it had some kind of a air lock, but at least after this struggle it's working great.

The front suspension is also sorted, I had to fit new wheel bearings as well as all the new ends on the tie-rods and drag links. The rest of this suspension that came from the donor Fleetline is in very good condition. Centre pin and king / link pins are all in good condition, simply cleaned and re-greased.

That's unfortunately it from the weekend...
