Pranged - and now where's the car?

Post by 1963 »

Anyone know a "Hallmark" panelbeaters or repair shop?

My Ma's '72 Beetle tried mating with another car on Thursday 28th, so it seems the front got banged about a bit. Corner of Republic & Rabie in Randburg.

She got a slip from First Road - I phoned them and it wasn't on their records. So they phoned their driver, George, who says he took it to "Hallmark".
I've tried the numbver they gave, and there doesn't seem to be any joy.

Anyone know anything about this place - like a contact number - and whether they're any good?

I wrote off a car two and a bit years ago, also towed by first road (not terribly impressed by the way they handled my car). From what i remember it also went to hallmark (think it was). I went to look for my car and it was not where they said it was so i found out where it had been "moved to" and went there, was not there either and then i got really pissed off and had words with the insurance company who immedietly payed out in full a few days later???

so just get the facts and try find the car, It is yours moms car and not the banks(presumably), they have no right to not show you the car. if you cannot find the car OR if the people are not helpful then fight the insurance company!

I suggest that you get hold of First Road again and do some shouting.

Thanks guys! Your info is much appreciated.

I should've mentioned I'm in Cape Town ... but yep, finally tracked it down - it is at the corner of Louis Botha and 12th Street. That's a v-e-r-y long way from Randburg, but I wouldn't expect any less from a tow driver who charges per kilometre - and when the car has an AA "do not tow" sticker. FFS.

The guy there says it's "quite badly damaged". I'll have to get Ma's mechanic to go have a look. So we'll have to see where things go from here. I might just be advertising a few spares, dammit.

Beetles can fairly easily be repaired and have no real book value. Try to get the car back, sod the insurance, and repair/restore the car yourself. The insurance company will, per definition, just rip you off. That's what they do. Everytime. Stat...

True that. Unfortunately, it's all more complicated. You know what mothers are like? Well, she's 85 and still insists on driving. The crux of the matter: no insurance. So I'm just waiting now to hear what she drove into ...

I definitely meant "shouting" but it seems that the car has been traced now anyway so no need. Though I would still be tempted to call them back and do some shouting
