Oval cabriolet

Post by fig »

mrsfig & I came across this baby around a blind bend on an unlit road after leaving the recent Velskoen drive-in cruise. His battery had gone flat from not charging and driving with the lights on. We helped him push the bug to a safer part of the road and left him there, as I had no tools or battery pack in the westy.

IIRC this Beetle was sold by a guy on the West Coast a year or two back and it was stolen after arriving in Joburg. I asked the guy about that and he said the car had been found abandoned the next day by his uncle.

I don't know. I was a bit uncomfortable knowing the car had previously been stolen. But it was stolen in Melville and we came across it in Melville so I figured it was probably OK. Also, he didn't bat an eyelid when I asked him if it had been stolen and recovered (I knew it had been stolen, but hadn't heard about a recovery) and he didn't deny it, just said his uncle had found it nearby the next day. He also had no issue with me photographing him in the car.

Here's the thread where it was first mentioned in the Spotted forum. Maybe Gavin can tell us more about the driver then. http://www.aircooledvwsa.co.za/viewtopi ... 0&p=196348

And here's the tread where Andrevdm reported it had been stolen. http://www.aircooledvwsa.co.za/viewtopi ... 2&p=202698

Wonder if he also has a blue std oval, like the one lifted in Melville a few days ago :)

Yes, I helped someone move a beautiful classic Beetle from a dark, blind corner to somewhere safe, thus preventing some drunken ass from wrecking it. :P
