Re: 1958 356A Speedster Replica
My buddy and I worked it out and to replicate a coupe from top to bottom to a point where glass and fitting can go on is about R20 000. That is extreme mates rates with no profit being made. Then you need the actual car to pull a mould off. Add the time to make a body and 42k isn't too bad.
Maybe Armand can chime in as to how much time and money has gone into his coupe? I'm sure it's not far off.......

Re: 1958 356A Speedster Replica
I visited Universal products today and must concur with Roger these guys are doing an excellent job.
I have made the sums and they look different to Gary's
I estimate R25000 worth of raw glass and steel per body
The mould needs to be at least 3 times as thick as a body in order to have a mould good enough for about 20 bodies it will need re inforcing about 3 times the steel in one car so the mould itself will eat R75000 worth of materials which would equate to At least R3750 per body meaning that the body now costs R28750 excluding Labour
I have spent in excess of R65000 so far and basically have 90 percent of a body and no production Mould
Some detail shots I took Today

Re: 1958 356A Speedster Replica
Must agree with Impi, I made my own trailer mould, and the mould alone cost more then R78K, then each moulding with its small parts, which also need moulds, cost R30k to mould.
At this point you still do not have mould payback, or labour, or overheads..........
Take it from me, you will not make these at that cost.
want one , get it now, because when they work out that they not making money, the price WILL go up.

Re: 1958 356A Speedster Replica
I'm quoting what I was told from my buddy, he buys direct from his work at a fraction of discounted retail prices. To put it into perspective, a 50 litre drum of resin costs him a little under R450. He buys chop matt by the 100m roll for under R1000. So it's way doable. I remember the prices that you were quoted by your fibreglass guy Armand and he was not cheap.
Arguments aside.........I'm so glad to see that these guys are legit.........awesome news and some killer pics.

Re: 1958 356A Speedster Replica
Right guys ! It's been a while but I finally have some great pics to post!
My car came back from the painters today. I have spent the last few months agonizing over colours. At the beginning of the project I was convinced the car should be silver, then I wanted Aqua marine blue... then silver, then an awesome matt/eggshell silver I saw on a Roadster (thanks Uncle John !) then grey, then beige. I finally settled on a colour which appeared beige on web pics but when I had the Glazurit sample colour mixed up from the original paint codes I was absolutely blown away at how it looks in real life. So , without any further waffling... I give you, my 1958 356A Speedster replica donned in a brand new coat of Stone grey: (PORSCHE 5710 1957-1959 STEINGRAU)

Hey Armand. Sorry my friend, I didn't take any pics of the inside...again!
I only thought about it when I was uploading them. I really wanted to show how nicely the deck lid interior skin came out.

Re: 1958 356A Speedster Replica
@ Sambabus, I found them, in someones back yard
One on one car, one on another car, one in a waist high grass and the last one buried in mud. Took a lot of love and a few bits of green paper to get them looking neat-ish.
