Getting Molly through roadworthy...

Post by My bug »

Towards the end of last year we found a Kombi -1972 Microbus L, standing in the veldt outside the little town where I live. R 6K later and she (christened the Molly Morgan) was mine. So far I have:

1. Replaced engine oil, spark plugs, "dizzy" and set valve to rocker arm clearances.
2. Had the generator serviced.
3.Cleaned upholstry (we found cigarette butts, coke bottles, miles of old carpeting, frosted glass :?: and some white powder suspiciouly like some kind of drug.
4.Replaced accelerator cable, put a carb kit in.
5. Fixed electrical system
6. My friend helped me take the ignition out and he cut a new key (the po had lost the origional :( )
7. Replaced the starter motor and got a new battery.
8. Replaced the master cylinder and rear wheel cyclinders.
9. Installed a new horn.
10. Dismantled the left hand C.V. joint to replace boots and re-grease.

Hopefully we will drive through to Willowmore next week to try and pass the roadworthy test. I still have to:

1. Replace rear door catches
2. Replace rear brake linings.
3. Replace front brake pads.
4. Replace some front suspension perishables.
5. Adjust clutch
6. Hope for the best.
Isn't that what you'd expect from VW?

Sorry, the last few days have been unbelievably busy!

Anyway last weekend I installed:

1. The Rebuilt original master cylinder.
2. Another CV boot

I also fixed all the front and side door catches and locks so that they work with a new cut key.

A friend and I rebuilt both front calipers and installed new pads.
Finally I fitted re-lined brake shoes to the rear wheels (the autoparts store had given me the wrong type of shoe :-(.

Today we drove through to Willowmore in the Eastern Cape +- 160km from where I live. We left at 6 am and it took us three hours to get there... Molly is only a 1600 stock standard flat four. Anyway she ran beautifully and PASSED THE TEST! I now have a roadworthy bus.

Nice original bus! Congrats
(Ok,Ok, I know I have said this alot of times, but do yourself a favour and move the fuel filter out of the engine bay, you don't want a nice bus like yours going up in smoke, the filter is a weak link & on top of the dizzy)
