Sambas in South Africa are good for only 2 things: showing off and sunburn.

Yep, that is it! In 2005 this Beetle (built by IMPI) was given away as a first prize in a Windhoek Draught competition in Bloemfontein in which Gerhard (Volksieshop) and I were closely involved in organizing (also where I learned to consume Windhough Draught :drunks: ) It was on display high up on a stand outside the Reds Night Club in Nelson Mandela Road. Good to see it still has the original stickers on :hangloose:

Yes it is.

I dont know exactly how old the camper is but I am the third generation to own it in the family. My grandfather bought it second hand almost 40 years ago, my father had it since I was born and now it's mine.

The kombi tows it really well actually. I drive a steady 100km/h on the flat, it feels it quite a bit up the hills though, but still managed 3rd gear-65km/h up Sir Lowry's pass. Once the kombi is going it's momentum is quite good and holds it's speed well. I normally just tow a small trailer for weekends which almost has no effect on speed but this old camper is quite heavy. Even towing it with the mercedes it feels pretty heavy.

Here it is:

All original canvas besides a couple of patches. Still has all it's old cutlery and crockery too.

Super cool trailer Sean.

What make is it?

I've been looking for a small antique trailer that can be pulled by a bus, and a camping trailer would be first prize.

Spoke with my grandfather this afternoon and found out it's a Sprite Tour-away. Seems like it was made in the late 60's and 70's. All these years I never even new what it was.

I have only ever seen one other one that was just like it and it was early last year when driving through Mossel Bay, one was standing at a Camp World caravan dealership. I gave them a call today but it has been sold and apparantly went up to Johannesburg.

We always used it for traveling between places when sailing, it really has been all over the country and people are always interested but have always said that they have not seen anything the same.

According to my grandfather he paid R450 in the early 70's when he bought it. We definately got it's money's worth out of it.
