Hi Guys,

Im jumping into a kit car built with an abused kit,and Idont know if Iwill survive it.[img][img]http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/7348/ssa40259hb9.jpg[/img][/img]

The body was abused a lot and a lot of planning will have to go in here.
I think the car is a british Covin kit car,the steel chassis looks looks like it in any case.Work has been done on it to fit it to a Beatle chassis and I will carry on with that idea for now--- jst to get it through road worthy and lisencing. Strange how things work. I was looking through a file of old Brochures and things and found the build instructions for a covin kit PM me with your addres and I will make a copy it is about 30 pages

Hi,
Yes mine is a kit car called a COVIN, made in the 80s inthe UK.
Im told that about 20 cars/kits were sold in SA. A very active and helpful COVIN club is looking after the interest of Covin owners in the UK. Although Covin won a court case over copy rights or some thing against Porsche they stopped producing the kits. Themould are still in existance but locked away.
The kit or complete car was available in 70s-80s model 930 turbo type 911 form.You could get a coupe or cabriolet with normal head light or pop up light fasion.
Chassis was a choice between a shortened Beatle or a purposed made tubing chassis. I got a feeling that the local agent went for a type 3 floor pan and he modified the tubing chassis slightly from the UK model.
The body was made from fibre glass and the local one was of high quality.

Will keep you informed as Igo along-- this will be a long ride--

In the UK type 3 cars were plentifull when Covin started producing the kit.
That chassis is the same as the build manual except that it uses 411 rear suspension parts my guess is also the 411 gearbox which should work great

Yes Armand I think you are right with the 411 swing arms,I dont know how they look but you should reconise them from my picture. Ihave seen some Beatle floor pan on the Covin site where the tapering front section have been widend to square of pan behind the front wheels.Im was hoping the brochure could tell us something about the local cars.Anyway Im planning to put mine on a Beatle pan --more available and more understandable at test ground. (Buggy type roadworthy)
Im not planning to built a mega bugs car --for now--but rather get the car on the road as soon as possible.After that Iwill gradualy upgrade as funds allow.I have some radical ideas but the car will never get on the road if I unlock them now.

Yes, those are 411/412 arms indeed! Haven't seen any of 'em in AGES

(spent a lot of time under a Variant on my back in my 'earlier life')

Anyway, this is what they look like on a 411 or 412... and you simply CANNOT go wrong with a Type 4 'box - they last FOR EVER!

The basic dimensions of the perimeter of the chassis would rather favour the basic shape. The taper of the beetle chassis would really stuff you around.

Hi Guys,
Armand I had the tape out yesterday and you are right I need a Type3
floor pan which will limit my options somewhat as they are scarce.The first Beatle based Covin in uk were on Beatle pans so I assumed mine would be similar. Some of the cars Ive seen have got an insert section to make the floor pan more square.
Now 2 questions:- 1 ).Are all Type 3 pans same size, my info is yes (2400 mm wheel base) I need a wheelbase of 2280 mm. will have to cut the pan.
2) Who in Gauteng can cut a floor pan in such a way that it will still pass the roadworthy test.[img][img]http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/3658/s5000256no6.jpg[/img][/img]

And then I actually checked it out on a pan that I send to the rubbish pit some time ago.
