Guys what is the advantages of taking the beetle or bus down to metal?

I am thinking of doing this on my 62 but not sure....?

I also managed to find an OEM engine lid for the 63 with the T handle and even though the lid is in very good condition the paint is not, should I take down to metal before primer and respray....?

Also Andy if I am unable to find the prep wheel for £7.xx would you be able to purchase 2 for me and I will pay you via paypal and you could ship for me, but I am sure I can find these locally.....

Wow, I can't believe it's over a year since I updated this

Well it's still on going, I'm sure it's the same for you guys...it's all down to money and time and more money.
After all the welding and Bare metalling I had bus out into the alley and jet washed it all down, rolled it over on the rotisserie and did the underside as well. I was amazed at the amount of crap that I managed to wash off the underneath, All the south african soil is now outside my neighbours garage

The underside is now all painted in Por 15 Products firstly marine clean...then wash it down, then the metal ready....then wash it down......then the POR 15

The annoying thing is, I've used it before and I've read posts on here about what a pain it is to get off your skin, so did I wear gloves......off course not!
Also....had a bit of a play with some lead loading....

The front end all just needs tightening up now and I have to get the front wheel alignment sorted.
Got the gearbox back in, so just need to get the new rear brake lines on

I decided I fancy having ago at Lead loading.....and I really enjoyed it....it's not perfect, not by a long shot but at least I will get away with either just a bit of stopper or a thin skim of filler.

Engine lid hinge area bit before

And after

And the other side

And the rear corner I was dreading....I couldn't get any more of the dent out as it has the inner skin in the cargo area , I had tried welding things on and trying to pull it out but, it just wasn't happening.

But it turned out ok, again a skim of filler.

Really enjoyed the Lead loading....once you get past the annoying / frustrating part of watching it all fall on the floor, and you get used to working with it I found it really relaxing.
I know the camera never lies but I don't think it does my lead loading justice, it is better in the flesh, er well...lead

So....I have just started putting on the primer, I'm about half done so I'll try and get some pics up when it's fully primered.

Sambas in South Africa are good for only 2 things: showing off and sunburn.
