MORE POWER!!!
HOwsit guys...
I have a 1600, and I want to make more power... and go faster...
I'f I have a budget of about 10k...
What do you guys recommend for that price ?
Is it better to stay N/A or go the turbo route (this will obviously be more expensive and less relaible??)

Re: MORE POWER!!!
Im building up a mild street 1600 motor on that same budget with the following specs:
W100 spec reground cam
mildly ported and polished heads
twin solex 32-34 pdsit carbs
balanced pistons and conrods
8:1 CR
8 dowelled flywheel and crank
hoping for 70-80Hp at the flywheel
You can add a big bore kit probably the easiest way to more power but they cost R3600 + R800 to machine the case and heads thats almost half your budget
Easieat way to add more power by bolt on parts without splitting the case is with a good exhaust, twin carbs like weber IDF's and a CR bump up to 8:1
Turbo way is also a good route not quite sure on the cost

Re: MORE POWER!!!
You can get the big bore kits from Calooker or from Dave Rowley in CT that will take your 1600 motor up to a 1914cc
Calooker has a nice 1835cc motor in the offered section here for R4500
it has a nice cam, counterweight crank etc all the nice goodies

I finally have some budget again to carry on with my beetle

Re: MORE POWER!!!
This is more or less what you can expect..... This is with decent intake runners and exhaust tuned for the motor. This is only ball park numbers, don't quote me on this
Nothing is optimized nor measured, so only estimates here....

Re: MORE POWER!!!
Used your motor specs. The 41Kw = 56.4Hp The RPM range is not pinned down so it spins a bit fast at the mo :/ Expect closer to 48-50Hp with standard inlets and 4-1 off the shelf exhaust.

Re: MORE POWER!!!
Thanks for running the specs through your dyno program I was hoping for 70 + HP or at least a 40% power increase, that 50Hp is the same as stock planning on limiting the rpm to 5000 rpm absolute max though
Im also using EMPI ICT weber manifolds with the 32/34 pdsit carbs
I spent almost R12000 on this motor so far so was hoping for more power from it but when its done and in the car im gonna get it dynoed at windsor garage by jesse hugget just to see what it really makes

Re: MORE POWER!!!
Do you have the flowbench numbers, port length and sizing numbers fir the inlets? Was valve work done and if so what? What exhaust is used? Was the carbs mach ported to the inlet manifold and the inlet to the heads?

Re: MORE POWER!!!
Engine is a work in progress so heads are still bone stock but I am gonna get a 3 angle valve job done on them, reshape the combustion chambers, open up the inlet ports to my round port template sizes and blend the exhaust port in especially by the guide boss and match port the inlet manifolds to the heads.
Intakes match up nicely to the carbs
Im still deciding on the exhaust but will probably use a cowley type 4 in 1 buggy exhaust
Valve sizes are 35.5mm inlets and 30mm exhausts the heads I got are from a 1600 SP Beetle they are twinport ones

Re: MORE POWER!!!
Aren't the 1600 engines 1641cc? It kinda stood out as it must be the only 1600 engine ever made that was actually 1600+. I might be wrong...
Maybe the change from 85.5mm to 87mm bore is already an aftermarket upgrade? I'm under the impression that VW did that themselves.

Re: MORE POWER!!!
1600 engines came out standard with 85.5mm which equals 1584cc with the std 69mm stroke.
87mm cylinders are a waste of time cyl walls too thin

Awesome thanks man.

The beetle I own actually used to belong to Dave Rowley I think.
