Centrel locking unit from spare parts
Hi all
my brothers each got a central locking kit for their Puma's and had 2 spare actuators each (4 actuators in kit and only 2 doors on each car). Which left me thinking, can i make my own kit from the spares. I used a normal electric gate/garage door reciever and remote and 4 relays (normally open) and two of the actuators. Ive also mounted my key into the remote. it all works, just need to install it. its not complicated to build, and very simply to setup once its done. Any takers for photos and if there is demand then wiring diagrams?
Three button remote- one button to open, one button to lock and the third i will use as an immobiliser.

Hey James how hard is this to do? Overall price? And how many cases of beer for you to make me a set? Maybe two, as the actuators come in sets of two, anybody else intersted? We gotta get James to spend less time on that Lotus!!

Easy to do. Had the kit in the Porsche, but pulled it out to use on the beetle. But still need cables to get the actuators to work properly - need to go through a 90 degree transition as there is not enough space to mount the actuator directly under the lock mechanism. Probably end up costing more than the generic "central locking kits" available BUT You can choose your remote and receiver. Still want to find a new VW key and See if i can get it to work on the receiver, else, transplant the circuit board into the new key and cut and transplant my key onto the flick mechanism. thanks for the reminder, something else to do in Middelburg (along with painting the chess set i cast a while ago in white metal) when i'm stuck on sitebugspray wrote:Hey James how hard is this to do? You can buy the actuators as separate sets of 2. I'll post pics some time.

Coolios man. Sounds like a plan. So you say the generic is a better option? But then you don't get your choice of remote? Ok well the newer type remote you thinking about, sounds waaay schweet. Will look into the universal kits with remote and see if the circutboard will fit in a new vdub key.

If you are using the universal type of central locking motor, you will find that the stroke of the actuator is longer than the travel of the beetle "locking rod". You end up with a system where the rod from the actuator has to bend everytime the actuator plunger moves out.
In the long run this cause the screw clamps to work loose and then your central locking stops working.
There is a solution though......

have been thinking of this a whil,james why dont you just buy a 2 door kit they like 300 bucks and then use your setup as a remote ignition and start?for shows?

ya, can easily do a remote start, though you will have to figure out a way to ensure the car wont start unless it is out of gear, easy enough.
I dont like the remotes that came with the central locking kits hence i made my own kit. you can also wire it up to flash the lights or anthing you want really.
But not really my thing.
I'm thinking of making a intermittent windscreen wiper system next. be a separate switch with possibly even a slow intermittent and a faster intermittent...

yep anything is posible...let me get what your saying?do you want to use a remote switch to make the wiper wipe say once and say 2 seconds later wipe again?or do you want the motor physicly wiping slower?

No, new project altogether. I'm no electronic engineer so these are fun to figure out and build objects for me. The wiper system i want to make is completely new project not related to the locking system. basically it will wipe and then a few second later wipe again, not continuous like our current acvw's..

I was thinking maybe using a golf, polo motor to accomplish that, but somebody told me it wouldnt work, cant remember the reason now tho.

you will need someting to delay the switching of the motor...maybe a cap charging up and then discharing into a relay...oor maybe use a pulse width modulator or small sqaure wave generator circuit to create a alternating dc signal with a very low certain set frequency that can control the on and of time of the motor...easist might be a simple bi metal strip like the ones used in over current relays...but chosen at a certain ampage so its protects so to speak the motor but having the corect time delay for di wipers to do one wipe...bugspray a motor is a motor is a motor they can be design to run a certain speeds but the cant stop and start themselves...thats controled by the control circuit and thats what you want from the polo not the motor...
