'56 Oval Speedo Resto

Hi guys.

After seeing Goblin's Oval project coming along in leaps and bounds... with the 2.1l Dave Rowley motor acting like a complete animal :hangloose: , I completed the resto on his 56 Oval clear needle Speedo. I have added some pics of the process, which comprised a complete strip down of the clock and the following:

Cleaning of the entire clock mechanism, regrease of all the brass gears and shafts and all moving components, repair and replacement of the gasket and rubber seals, polishing of the glass face, refurb of the bezel, respray of the black inside trim, polishing of the clock face as well as replacement of the green and red gels, and fitting the missing ally tube that channels the bulb light to the blue "brights" light.

Thereafter the bulb holders for the indicator and oil / genny lights was refurbed and replaced, and all missing bulb holders and the 3 way contact was replaced.

Lastly the back cover was completely derusted with a dremel mini drill and then sanded and clear coated to compliment the under bonnet area...

Please excuse the quality of some of the pics, as they really dont do the final result any justice.

Sambaowner... Anytime Eugene... just give a shout mate!
Blitz...I normally dont have a problem resetting 60's clocks back to Zero, but did not want to take a chance on Goblin's clear needle oval speedo. Pulling the pin from the barrel is all good and well for the 1st four barrels and spinning it back to zero by hand (or finger :lol: )

But if you pull the pin out from the last barrel and your reference point is lost ( the needle lifted to the other side of the needle stop comes out for some reason) the clock goes completely out of calibration and the entire hassle of having to do it all over again and having the spring rewound, is just too much hassle!

To be honest, working on this oval speedo was easier as the needle and other components are stronger and the needle itself is not as brittle as the bone type of needles found on 60's clocks...

Thanks Riaan! The beetle speedo does not require the drill to get it back to zero luckily... they are just free wheeling barrels, held in place by plastic and metal gears and a central locating pin... check below: :D

Err, OK that sounds like a plan..!

So shout if anyone is interested in me doing their Speedos.

Also, I have been wanting to restore ACVW steering wheels on a slightly bigger scale, other than just doing my own. Will post some pics of a full resto soon to get the appetites going hopefully...

What do you guys think?
