ok , so the story behind this is I was going to let fig build me a roofrack when Merlin told me about one for sale.
I picked it up for 350 bucks

So the plan is to change this rack and make it into something similar to those bekowa racks...After I saw Muderick's rack I was hooked!!!
The rack will be cut, resprayed, and wooden slats will be fitted. New clamps will also be custom made(can anyone help with that???)
PS. its for my bug.

So I finally bought some wooden Slats, and decided that 9 would be the perfect number.
So i sanded them down and got down to vanishing them with some outdoor wood protection.

I decided to support the local shops instead of going to a proper panelbeater/spraypainter....
What A big MISTAKE!!!

The agreement was that the guy would sandblast the rack, and the give it some nice coats of primer and finish off with a Ice White that I had chosen out of the Spray paint-colour book he had shown me...

And what did this idiot do?.....
I get the rack back and it turns out that this d*os had painted the rack by hand with normal bloody plascon velvet or something

Needless to say i was pissed!!
And to crown it all the 1 corner even looked like this!!!!

That sucks! I'm very wary of normal panelbeaters, most are not interested in work if it isn't backed by big bucks from an insurance company. This is exactly the reason why I would support guys like Buggoff and other guys with talent operating from their 'yards...

yah same here. unless the business is their own, you are dealing with salary men and women and they couldn't give a monkeys.

the level of service i've had from local suppliers with my 59 is shocking. it's lead me to learn the skills myself and make sure it's done right the first time

SO I was looking for something in the garage...and I saw the once forgotten roofrack.. I decided that it was time to finish it, right in time for CITP.

The rack is not 100% but it will have to do for now.
Things I would still like to do:
1. Repaint rack 2. Sand down wood slat edges 3. get fishtank pipe for the "legs" 4. shorten bolts used to attach wood slats to the rack 5. FInd vintage petrol tank to put on the rack

Haindpaint it with Hammerite "Hammered White" as close to ice white you will get at home. Ill upload some pics of my rack that I painted at home. Brushed on and it comes out hammered and quite hard wearing. I love the hammered finish. Your rack looks closer to the original than mine though I like it, and HAWT wheels it really suites the bug!

I just realised yesterday that the roofrack on a bus makes it a real pita to wash the roof properly. Murphies law I suppose.

Load something onto the 'rack, BF. Then you won't see the dirt.
