Went out this morning, whilst her inside was sleeping, and managed to attach the last few bits in the bonnet area (glove box, windscreen wiper motor + wipers, ash tray etc).

Then....

DISASTER!!!

Turns out the rear drivers wheel has 3 stripped threads on the hub. Ar** Wa** Bollo**s and Sh**. This scuppers the plan to have it towed to the auto electrician as I don't trust 2 bolts to hold a wheel on.

Anyone managed to solve this issue before? Is it a bitch to fix? What would be the easiest solution? Buy a 2nd hand hub from somewhere in durbs?

Spent the morning removing all the crap that managed to call the bonnet rubber lip home..

Will give it a final coat of paint tomorrow. Car, weather depending, will be off to the auto sparky tomorrow to sort out the glitches caused by the body works and also install the 3rd brake light and some anti-theft device.

Need to work out how to get a cable from the rear windscreen into a place near the rear lights...

Pushing onto the flat bed so it can be moved to the auto electrician, the rear hub finally gave out and the wheel fell off. Luckily it happened slowly, so there was no damage done.

I now need to source a rear hub before friday. I'm hoping they are all the same, so one from a newer model will fit this 59, anyone able to elaborate?

Fingers crossed it's all fully wired up by friday, including the anti-theft device and rear light, then it's off to get it roadworthy'd.

Sorry to hear that man. Hope you get it sorted. But atleast you can source one while its at the sparky. You mind telling us what sorta alarm system you going for. Not classified info, but more like is it a autostyle shelf system, or a vesa approved level 1000, im looking at getting one myslef.

It's not any approved one, they are all pretty wank and easily broken. He is fitting a basic cut-off from the alternator to the coil. Usual hidden switch that prevents the abortions from trying to steal it.

In all honesty, I hate alarms that make a noise, they are utterly f**king useless in this day and age

It will be interesting come the time the insurance company wants a valuation of the car and also to know what security is in place. The last time I tried to get insurance, they refused to believe a beetle was worth more than 10k.

No pictures but some amazing text..

Hilda was picked up from the auto electricians and taken to get all the final bits done before the COR. A guy passed by Fred's house (auto electrician) and saw Hilda and stopped and walked in. He said I should give him a call as he has a load of stuff and it would be good to chat.

I popped round there just now and his name is Eric van Rensburg and he was part of the VW club in Durban since the 70's. Anyway he opens up his garage and it's like a treasure trove. Boxes of parts from the 50's till the 80's. He also mentioned having access to a kubelwagen or two.

He is now helping me out source the harder to find bits and will also help with technical advice as I need it.

Utterly brilliant day and glad to see this car moving one step closer to it's first drive in nearly 3 years.

The drums are utterly gone, as are the brake cylinders. No point even trying to find used ones down here, so a phone call to Volkspares and 2400 later, I'm having a set couriered down.
Did ask about the price of a disc setup, R18000.

hmmm 18k to stop quicker, naah i'll just drive slower
