1600 mild street engine buildup

It would be cheaper but can you trust a 30 something year old cam and I would also have to correct the valve geometry with a stock reground cam.At least with a new billet cam I know im starting with a brand new cam that will last and besides the billet cam was not that expensive compared to buying an Engle cam from the states

Just suggesting, after all, it was your first choice.

You have to do this anyway

And dont forget to get new followers and then run them all in together properly

I know it was my first choice Tony Z but I think the billet cam would be better in the long run also
more durable as the followers dont need to stick so far out their bores like with a reground cam.

Ive got new followers on their way from Rui as well as the hd solid rocker shaft

I got a few more parts today a pressure plate,kombi carb linkage and std crank pulley also got a new plugged oil pump from Dave R
I also collected the cam followers and solid rocker shafts from the post office today thanks Rui
Spent 2 hours today shimming up the rockers on their new shafts.
Just got to get all the rotating assembly bits balanced but that will have to wait till month end.
With a bit of luck it might be running by year end

Cam is ready should be delivered today, it took a bit longer because it was sent for nitriding

Nice one dsan

nitriding is a chemical process to harden the working surfaces of the cam ie lobes and bearing journals
The cam arrived today here are some pics of the cam and the cb performance assembled solid rocker shafts

i do hate you guys in Capetown and Joburg as we here in sunny KZN dont have access to such amazing hardcore workmanship ie: DaveR etc here to help with our projects..

Just keep your hear down and follow through!!

Yep us cape town guys are lucky to have people like DaveR he's advice and workmanship has been invaluable on this buildup so far he's a guy who really knows his stuff when it comes to beetles.

Weren't you going to build a nice motor at one stage I think I remember seeing it somewhere on the forum.

I might be buying a buggered up beetle then fix it up and putting this motor in it in the near future

Parts are going to DaveR this weekend for balancing one of the final things to do before I can start assembly which should be next month
Also my modified stock 3 bolt cam gear should also be ready from DaveR it was cheaper to buy a good stock s/h camshaft with 3 rivet gear than buy an aftermarket 3 bolt cam gear so now i got another stock cam

ans yes i have all the making of the perfect German look in my garage...but finances will only be available from next year...and then hopefully the life long dream can start..

Well the assembly stage is just around the corner all the rotating assembly bits got dropped off this past weekend at DaveR for balancing also got my modified stock 3 rivet cam gear back from him which he fitted to the cam for me.
Will post plenty of photos during the assembly phase

What you dont realise is that you do have the workmanship, you just have to find it. Know exactly what you want and make sure the machinists you use know what it is you want.

There are plenty guys doing things their way and doing a pretty damn good job of it.... why cant you?

And dont worry about a project taking a long time.... mine took 7 years of collecting before I started building the engine. Then 2 years after it was built, I finally got to drive it for the first time....

Got the rotating assembly parts along with the pistons back from DaveR just got to clean all the parts thoroughly before I do a trial assembly of the casing just to check everything is 100% then the real assembly starts
Anyone know where I get can moly assembly lube here in CT
