Re: My ex type 1 turbo project (Changing to Historic Racer)
The best way to build a car like this is over time. Buy a couple of parts each month and keep them aside. (do not keep the invoices
those will make you go crazy)
It's actually not that expensive to build a car for historic racing. You can get away with a load of std items. All depending which class you wish to compete in. For class F you would be able to run a stockish 1641cc without problems. You just need handling
She ran a 1:18 at Zwartkops. I've never been to phakisa before so lets see what happens.

Re: My ex type 1 turbo project (Changing to Historic Racer)
Re the budgets... 4age is right, collect things slowly and put them aside.
For my engine, I spent 7 years collectng parts before I started assembly.
And as 4age said, dont keep the receipts. I have a special bin for my receipts... one day when I am feeling brave, I will take them out and add up the damage. If you have a budget, you will spend at least double that at the end of the day....

Agreed. How much does it cost? Make a fair estimate, add 50%. Then double it to finish the job. That's excluding fire damage...

And of course don't tell your wife how much you spend. Also make sure that she does not get the slips.

Re: My ex type 1 turbo project (Changing to Historic Racer)
I'm running her on 95 octane fuel, max timing under full throttle 28' advance. No detonation.
Compression makes power, but also produces heat.
My dad built the heads ages ago, cant really remember the valve sizes. But they have got special valve guides that wont fall out. Also running doulble valve springs with cro moly retainers and collars.

Re: My ex type 1 turbo project (Changing to Historic Racer)
Scat dual springs. I think anything from 6000rpm you need the double or high duty springs. Also if you are running big heavy valves then you do need them.

We had some issues at the phakisa race. Stripped the engine and found this

Re: My ex type 1 turbo project (Changing to Historic Racer)
The cam follower broke... why I do not know yet. Maybe it was over revving. Went to 8000rpm once on a down shift.
