Import/export??
Ok, before I get flamed, I am the one exporting. I have read the views on you guys' feelings of exporting your VW's. Also that importing a car sounds not very doable, due to the law on left hand drive vehicles etc. Now here is my question, as a Beetle can be swapped from left to right hand drive fairly easy, and parts can be imported without much trouble. So why not find suitable Beetle Convertable bodys, say here in the States, swap them over to right hand drive and send the body over. It is firstly parts and secondly it is right hand drive, all the buyer has to do is source a pan, and put it back together. As convert Beetles can be had fairly cheap here, granted they might need a little restoration (roof, paint, etc.), I have seen then for around $100.00 and up (depend on year and condition) Well it is just an thought and I wanted to put it out there.

Re: Import/export??
cm-tlr, I do not understand your comments? Why would I want to export TO the USA, as I am already here. The only reason why the brits can afford to import all these cars from different places is because the exchange rate is good for them, but this current financial situation will not last much longer and the tide might change. You Brits are already putting up a pissing match about all the classic Mini's we import from you, you now want to place a special export tax on them to keep them in the country. So it is the same for the South Africans on their VW's. Leave their cars alone.

Re: Import/export??
sorry i thought you meant you export from SA to usa and it would be stupid if people import vws into a country and export at same time, why not keep the ones already there....can you see what i mean now? and i couldnt care less about the minis, soo many about im sure it doesnt make that much difference cars should go where they are wanted and are going to be looked after best. and what current financial situation we have dropped against nearly every currency so much so that we used to be 1 pound for 1.3 euros its now 1to 1 almost!! also no jobs and no money lending we are in recession!!!1Watercool wrote:cm-tlr, I do not understand your comments? Re: Import/export??
Interesting idea that - I'm sure they used to say the same about a cute little animal called a quagga, some dumb bird called a dodo and those odd split screen Kombi's and early Beetles we used to have in SA........cm-tlr wrote: soo many about im sure it doesnt make that much difference

Re: Import/export??
Watercool,
I like your idea. If and when you've got time could you give us an indication of the going rate for convertibles between 1960 and 1970.
If am not mistaken, you also have a publication called Auto Trader over there.
If a few of us club together for a container this import idea might even be feasible.
It would be so cool to have an honest to goodness real life convertible instead of a beheaded Beetle - no offense meant to any of our local convertible owners.

Re: Import/export??
The goverment has also put a stop to the import of used spares in particular chassis, as the crafty locals were buing up Hi-Aces and the like by the ship load from Japan, and the goverment put a stop to the import of complete second hand cars, what the locals were then doing was to bring them in, in sections and welding them up (even worse) which is now also not allowed, so sorry dudes I think the plug has been pulled on thes one by the goverment too, just like the import of complete used rides, RHD or not.

For what it's worth, ignorance has no limits ......
