Help with locating a splitty/kombi/bus/camper

Post by cm-tlr »

hiya, here is a bit of a life story so sorry for this but hope you guys can help :D

my parents are from SA but i was born and bred in the UK, i might be popping out to SA in august to visit family. I have always wanted a classic VW because my dad used to tell me stories of his '63 splitty all the time and i loved the image that went with having one. Unfortuneately as they are extremely expensive over here there was no chance of me affording one as my first car plus my parents thought i should get something smaller to learn in. So i settled for a ford fiesta  don't get me wrong lovely little car and it has proved that im happy to work on a car (i have done everything from adjusting tappets, about to fit new interior and fitted and sprayed new bumpers)

so to get to the point finally, i was wondering how many splitties are about in SA and how much they are, my dad reckons they should be fairly cheap compared to over here and if that is the case would be interested in importing one. so can you guys suggest any where (names, websites would be helpful) in and around Cape Town where i could get hold of splitties and also any information on exporting, and shipping costs/legalities would be great :D

thanks if you have put up with all of that

I think that you will find that most guys are anti exporting on this site. You guys have plenty project cars in your country. Give our dwindling vw resources a break. Buy something in your country. By the way, we don't have any vw buses, they are all over there in the uk.
If it's too low, you're too old

Welcome cm-tlr.

If you read the welcoming note and the rules, you would see that we are anti-exporting.The only reason why it's "cheap" is because of the exchange rate.

You are still welcome to contribute to the site, but please don't ask for the jewels on your second post.

sorry guys didnt realise how few there were.......... all the uk sites have stuff like 'new shipments from SA every month' which i assumed meant there were more than enough out your way. and a decent base over here works out at about 140000rand i think, and as a lowly student i cant afford that so was just looking for a cheap way into the scene
again sorry

Do you realy mean to tell me there are NO restorable bussses in the UK.In the last couple of months with the economy, the importers/exporters have been hard hit,and even they have to stop ripping the buyers off. It's just a fad because everyone wants one.If you wait 3 more months, they will try and give them away.

i dont think i said there were no restorable buses, i said they charge extortionate prices. £5,500 (83000 rand)will get you a late rusty shell more than likley LHD your looking at between £8500-£10,000 (130,000-150,000 rand) for a runnning RHD with not too much rust on it. and i have seen early samba's for about £20,000 and even that needed a resto badly!

Wow I just found a nice looking one for £6500:

and another camper for £8000

And this is just on eBay.... not rusty shells either.
To be honest with you the buses in SA cost the same as in the UK these days minus shipping.

If your a student then a bay is probably the way to go, splitties cost more to restore and its already not exactly cheap. Good luck with finding your bus, just keep at it and one will pop up in the UK

ahh so that is how the dealers don't make money.........

i only came here for information and i got ridiculed......maybe the folks in aus will be nicer (oh no he di'nt)

well im gonna look anyway, and if i find one that is right i will still ship it home guilt free.

i think all this anger is just born out of jealousy, you might have the climate, and the rugby but we have the buses and the parts 8)

We were trying to be nice.

But since you obviuosly can't be bothered to read, and also now trying to piss us off with your dumb comments,I suggest you run along and go look for a bus elsewhere.

You might have busses and parts, but we kept all the nice ones, that is why you can only buy an expensive crap bus over there.

You got beaten in the rugby, the climate keeps our nice busses nicer then yours, and you are obviously jealous that we have everything that you don't have. And the anger is actually fueled by your arrogance.

Bye bye now! :jerkoff:
