Beetle 1300 Single Port Heads Headache

Post by 73type2 »

I'm trying to fit my new ported 1300 single port heads onto my Beetle engine, replacing the worn 1300 single port heads. The new heads seem to be narrower, such that the intake manifold and exhaust do not line up with the head studs. Also, the pushrod tubes are now too long. I'm sure the new heads are definitely 1300 and not 1200. Do I need to use spacers? If so, the spacers add up to 16mm, which seems like a lot for those shims that are installed in the cyl head chamber. Any advice?

Here are some pics:

the 40hp engines use shorter pushrod tubes. I dont know if the barrels are shorter or not on the 40hp, but aimed with my limited info, I'd guess you have the earlier heads.

Is that new replacement heads from South America? They continued to use single ports long after rest of the world went dual port. They made various unusual hybrid heads for their applications. Some were for use of alcohol fuel. Over 10:1 compression. Some had less head fins and more cylinder fins.

Angle where inlet manifold meets head is 20 deg on 1300 onwards and flat for 1200. So yours look angled/later than 1200.

The 1200 had 64mm stroke. 1300, 1500, and 1600 use 69mm stroke and conrod is 7mm longer than 1200.
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.
Do'nt assume anything- (While doing fault-finding).

Judging from the inlet port in your pics, you don’t have 1200 heads there. The 1200 inlet ports are flat, later 1300 and 1600 are at a slight angle.

I’m not familiar with heads that are narrower. Where did you get them from and who did this porting?

Thanks Dawie. Seems like the only way I could use these heads is if I had the taller cylinders, as they definitely don't work with the standard 1300 cylinders I have. I can't even use them on my 1200 engine because of the angled manifold inlet, as you've mentioned. I'm a bit disappointed, though. These heads are nice. I guess I'm now forced to rebuild my original heads.

I bought them from a member in this group. It was two ported heads and a set of rebored barrels with pistons and rings. Hopefully he'll chime in and tell the story of the heads.

Do you have the part numbers from the heads?
If it's too low, you're too old

Part number is 113101373B.

On closer inspection, the heads don't seem ported. I was just so impressed at first by how shiny and new it looked that I assumed they had been suped up.

The heads and barrels were on a formula vee build motor that I bought to build a 1600 bus motor, and sold in my big parts sale. I am sorry they haven't worked out for you but don't have any more info on them, other than they were assembled when I got them.

No problem Brian. For now I'll use the barrels and pistons on my 1300, and have my original heads rebuilt.

Those heads are extensively modified. They have been flycut quite a bit and that is probably the difference in width that you are seeing from stock.

No expert ... but maybe you can have spacers made for the bottom of the barrels and still use them,

Maybe @Tony Z can pitch in here as he too is an engineer, and thinks like me.

They seem to have a lot of work done on them so should be very impressive when running.

Would be a shame not to use them........
