Engine rebuild

Post by JDone »

Hi,

New member here, my wife has been fortunate to inherit a 1966 karmann ghia, it has been sitting undercover for 30 years plus and we are beginning the process of restoring it. We are in need of front seats for the vehicle. Please advise where is best to post about the seats. Also what would be a fair estimate on a price to rebuild the engine for the karmann ghia, we are based in Johannesburg.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Very nice indeed! Are you going to keep the rear fender flares?

Thanks, hah hah my role will be “finance” and my wife will project manage it’s her baby. We unfortunately don’t have the knowledge to do it ourselves. Yes we want to try and get the wheel arches back to normal. It was estimated that the engine would cost around 20k to be rebuild properly do you think this is a fair price?.

that is in the ballpart of what a proper rebuild costs.
That is assuming of course that all the right things get done and it isnt just an overpriced cheap build

Hi. Nice project you have there. I’m going to offer my 2c worth here as a proud KG owner. They are stunning cars but drive like beetles. (My first car was a beetle which I drove for 8 years - thus the love for the KG). I am seriously considering having the engine redone with a few modest mods to boost the power from ~40hp to ~60hp and then converting the brake drums to discs. My advice to you is to do these things from the get-go and not be sorry you didn’t afterward. - and lose the flares please. Good luck on the build you’re going to love that car.

Hi

Since you're in the JHB area, if you are looking for a mechanic or body work specialist send me a PM for comparative quotes and work quality...happy to give you their details.

Thanks for the advice, all input welcome.

Things progressing well I think, the engine was rebuilt by eckmann motor conversions, gone from a 1500 to a 1600.
The wheel arches have been repaired.
