Update. Jeez Im hardly ever on here anymore.

So last update was paint removal and rust repair. So glad the bus was almost spotless with very little serious rust. Just the major problems being where water got in under the rubbers and the dog legs.

Bus has been totally paint free and rust taken of. Almost thought I should clear coat and run it like that just to show of he clean metal Haha.

So since the last update I've been over seas to a good few European countries, Italy Germany France To name a few. Such awesome places but very few classics on the road daily. The bus got some goodies from overseas also. But nothing too exciting, travelling is soo expensive but soo worth it. Thus the bus took a bit of a break and for a month not really much was done.
But after a break it started again.....

Soooo lets post some pictures shall we.....

While all the paint was removed I also painted the inside floor, etch primer to keep the rust at Bay (see what I did there?) then some stone chip to finish off. Looks quite awesome black. It will be sound deadened and floors done anyway.
Removed the engine as well, cleaned up the engine Bay (see what I did there again) primed and painted it also. Black as it's the best! Dont argue on that. Will look at head shield sound dampner for the engine bay before I put the motor back in. Want to get the bus quiet and comfy as possible to drive.

Now that the body was prepped to 10000% as I kept telling the shop I want 100% prep I don't mind the paint. Just want the prep to be done right the 1St time.
The metal in the right rear is a bit thin and has some worrying waves. Fixed it best we could with heat and some good ol elbow grease. Thats going to bug me later on I just know it... But anywho, let's get the paint primer on. And look for pin hole and other kak that shouldn't be there.

All in all the progress was awesome and I learnt about as well as got ffff naar with the paint shop. Why is it that people just don't listen at times or dont do what you ask, then you gotta explain it to them like a child...rant over. So paint primer is on. Bus looks wicked grey, do I leave it grey? Haha always wanted a primer grey car. Even before the cool kids came with that "nardo grey" all the fast Germans cars are in nowadays....

Nope wife does NOT want grey hahaha. Goofing of with my phone check this pic.... And last pic until I update again... Maybe a few days instead of months this time

some great progress there.
With the colour - when I redid my bus I was faced with the colour options too. I wanted to keep it white, but with so many white variations out there, which one to pick. I finally realised that the bus would actually look funny with a modern white, so I had it redone in its stock colour and it looks fantastic.
Think about it for a while when deciding your colour. The colour might be great, but make sure it will suit your bus and not leave you with a old car that is trying to look modern.
If you like the look of the primer, have it colour matched. Or maybe a two tone? Grey lower, white upper.

Nice progress on the westy glad to see that he is being treated right.
One question though: do you still have the hand/home made cupboard that I made to close up the "walkway" that was cut and are you putting it back? ok that was two questions.
On the colour issue I would stick to the original colours if it was my vehicle.

Thanks all. Yeah def coming along great.
The Colour has been chosen it is very modern but somehow I think will suit the bus perfectly.
The discussion on going with the original blue or something else was a battle. Decided on a different Colour because currently the bay window popularity has really shot up and there are blue busses everywhere. In jozi alone I counted about 6 that have been redone in a similar original blue.

Still have that cupboard. It won't be going back in, entirely because it's kak heavy. A new cupboard will be made up. Similarly to hold a gas 2plate stove, the fridge and possibly a small sink. Toying with the idea of the original buddy seat and a self standing table instead of the fold up one. All the original Westy cupboards are being polished and cleaned up for reinstall, but might consider wrapping them in a lighter wooden veneer.

Bus was originally a 3 seater up front. But I got it with single. What I think are Toyota seats. I have managed to find original single seats for the front for them a looong time ago from Hendriks. Awesome story : they were kept outside in the back yard for a bit and rained on etc. after a while a strange looking plant grew out of the seats.... will post a pic for id soon.

So the new original seats will are stripped down to bare metal and painted already with upholstery being done as well. The centre "console" was made from tread plate and some welded bars. Was a cool storage space but I think I want the spare tyre back I'm under there. So it's been cleaned up and painted. And the tyre will go back there with a custom wooden cup holder and USB port added.

Might have to weld in rails for the passenger side as it was a 2seater instead of single.

Seat were stripped primered and painted black. Such an improvement to the seating position for me as I'm short AF. with the old seats my feet dangle in the air haha

Glad to see that the spare wheel will be housed where it is supposed to be it was bolted to the rear hatch so when you opened the rear you had to prop up the door or else it would come down and thump you in the back; ever noticed the 2 small plastic bungs that close two holes in the rear door? I kept the spare on top on the roof rack
When i got the vehicle it was all open with the bars welded i shaped and bent the aluminium checkered plate lid for a bit more packing space
